  • Chain popping and poor low end power

I recently purchased a 2000 max iv with the 25 hp Kohler and am having some problems with it already. First problem is my right rear adjusting sprocket beneath the engine's bearing went out causing the chain to pop really bad when power was applied to the right side. I replaced the sprocket with one from a local farm store and it ran great for about one tank of gas and and now its doing it again. Second problem is it has poor low end power like if I were to nose up against a log and stop, then try to go, the belt would slip and it would not even be able to go over the log. The belt is brand new and hasnt been wet. I would greatly appreciate any help on these problems. This thing is twice as fun as any 4 wheeler would ever be.

if you have the splined axles check to make sure that the rear sprokets are lined up. the sprockets are held with a set screw that has a tendincy to break causing the sprocket to move out of alignment. I had the same problem on my 03 maxiv, and I canged mine to the new style snap ring axles. as far as the belt slipping try canging the spring in the secondary clutch to the red spring it gives you more low end torque and less belt slipping. you can get the sring at RI.

Ill check those things, thanks for your help. Any idea on how much the spring is and how difficult it is to change.

I'll bet the chain adjusters are the culprit. I had the same snapping and popping. When I changed the adjusters, works like a new machine....enjoy
