  • Maybe it's just me

So after buying my first Max ll cleaning it up changing oils replacing a broken throttle cable and boasting to my quad driving buddy that I can get through almost anything we took my new toy for its maiden voyage.
Well thank goodness we took a tow rope with us, the snow was probably shin deep and I needed recueing 3 times, as I kept bottoming out, with the wheels spinning, in the end I said F$?& it and parked it back in the garage.
I'm totally depressed and disappointed, maybe I'm doing it wrong

Time for tracks and a machine with 26" tires. Deep snow is the Achilles Heel for machines like Max II's and Attexes, unless you're running tracks, like I said.

Mud is almost like floating through water so it stays on top of it. What 21" tires do you have? Upgrading to some more aggressive 22" tires will give you a little extra ground clearance and most of the 22" tires out there for our machines offer better traction.

There is also a learning curve.....Once you gain some more stick time, you will make it through many of those places that get you stuck now. Not so much with the snow, but with mud holes etc.
You will also find that there are times when you have to have a winch. If you don't get stuck once in a while, you are just not challenging yourself. Most of the time when you do get stuck, it will only take a small tug to get you out. You will learn to hit those ditches, creeks, and nasty spots aiming for a tree (within winch distance) on the other side. You will need to plan for a route back too
The best advise: Quit riding with the quads. You can't keep up on open ground, and trying to will beat you to death. If you really want to show them up, take them through the thick woods with no trails....you can maneuver between the trees by skid steering, and they can't. It's like using the right tool for the right job thing.
Show up for a few group rides with the rest of us. You will get some good driving tips and learn exactly what that machine is capable of.
If you wanted to try out a set of the 22" rawhideIII tires, I do have an extra set. Come on over and we can do a little riding. Like Jeff said, 22" tires will make a big difference....but 25" will make for an even larger improvement. Here is a thread on it http://www.6x6world.com/forums/max-a...es-max-ii.html
Just look at the difference here comparing 25" tires to 22" tires:[IMG][/IMG]
          And the 22" compared to 26" [IMG][/IMG]

Thanks for the great tips guys, the tires I have are Goodyear rawhide 21x11, so here are a couple more questions,
If I go with bigger tires, how big can I go without any mods? Also does anyone know a part number for the drive belt for a Maxll and the best place to buy it.
I really appreciate all the help.

It's the horses for courses scenario again. One machine can't do everything.
I used to trial a Suzuki SJ in modified trials, it would have cleaned the brook in the video no problem. It would also out climb my Argo up muddy grades and through ruts with ease. It wasn't however as nimble through the trees as an Argo, it took a lot more shifting when stuck and it was nowhere near as much fun as the Argo

Tire sizes are tough.....You can squeeze a 24" onto the MaxII without mods in most cases (those are usually due to body sag), but finding 24" tires on a 8" rim is another story.
23" tires are just as bad, and the 25" tires all seem to take 9" rims.......so you are kindof stuck with 22" or do the body re-mold mod. and 9" rims w/25 tires.
MaxII's have an axle to axle spacing of 25" so you also have to make sure your 25" tires are not running big. I have a set of 25's you could try too.

Thanks Jim I think I will start looking for a set of 22"" i need new ones anyway as the ones I have hold air and have fairly good tread but have dry rot.
