  • Belt issue

Ok, my recently acquired 1992 MAX IV 20 hp Kohler magnum is having a belt squeeling issue when under uphill load. It currently has a Dayco max 1060 belt. That belt is 43 1/2 X 1-3/16ths. it is as loose as the belt in this thread: post #11

I went to the Dayco info on here and noticed the only smaller size listed is a 1092 42 3/4 x 1-3/16ths. Thats only a reduction of 3/4 inch. Not enough in my mind. I know I can shim the engine (It's not currently) but, I would rather find a smaller belt with at least 2 less inches and then shim from there. The Dayco chart on here IS from 2003 so, I was wondering if anyone knows of a belt that would be better than that 1092. I really dont want to shim over an inch.

You can order the proper belt from the factory.

Try looking on this chart for an alternative.

You can sometimes find really good prices on Amazon.

        HI
The CVT belt has to match the [trans] centre to [engine] centre distance ..........no exceptions

Belt squeeling can happen from the belt being either to tight or to loose [this sounds like your issue ]
To tight or loose does not allow for the clutches to operate in a synchronised pattern . The correct belt is the third member of this system . The correct system keeps the belt tension correct thru out the range of the pulley movement .
The low speed and high speed gearing is compromised if the belt length is incorrect . The correct belt will provide outstanding performance compared to an incorrect unit .

Squeeling can occur from misalignment also [this should not happen in a factory assembled clutch system ]
Check condition and operation of clutches
The belt surfaces of the pulleys need to be lightly rubbed with green scotch brite pad [deglaze process provides better belt grip ]

        FIT A FACTORY OEM BELT
[U MUST NO THE EXACT SIZE TO EXCHANGE WITH AN AFTERMARKET UNIT ]

check your engine mounts and make sure they are not broken , sometime the right side will brake and cause
the engine to lift up the right side causing the belt to be too long and thus you get belt squeel.
the belt is the right # 1060, maybe you just need a new one.

Great point. Make sure your t-20 is mounted in there nice and tight. You may have snapped a bolt or two causing the belt to be loose as well.

Thx guys. Engine and trans are rock solid where they belong. It's just weird to me that I can grab the belt from both sides and squeeze it almost to the point that the two sides touch each other. There is no way that is correct.
