I've had that issue on a friends machine. The shaft and lateral tube were rusty. You can try spraying penetrating oil where the tube rotates at the base of the laterals. Most likely, you need to remove the whole assembly to clean and lubricate everything.

Pretty simple job. There's a parts breakdown here on the site under manuals that I am having trouble opening. Disconnect the laterals from the transmission at the base of the laterals. If they are still stiff, you need to unbolt the lateral assembly from the frame to remove it.

The sticks oil through the hole in the hand grip. When they are real rusty they usually have to be dissasembed to free up. A few drops of oil down the handles when servicing stops this.

i noticed the same problem with mine. It has turned into a nightmare. I thought this would be and easy fix. I pulled the assembly out. Tried putting some pb blast down the holes . Could not get them to free up. It was only a little stiff to begin with I then heated the assembly with a torch because I could not drive the pivot pin out . And after heating with a torch it actually tightened up. I can stand on one and barely rotate the handle bar around. One handle bar I can not move at all. So its off to a machine shop tomorrow to see if he can press it out

Well thank god mine wa ot that bad. I took it apart this afternoon after work and it would only move about two inches. Heated and sprayed about five times and then all the way around it went. Beat it ot with a three pound. Mushroomed the end a bit, but nothing a grinder couldn't fix. Took a buffing wheel to the shaft and Dremel to the handle holes and eureka smooth as smooth could be.. Thanks for the inste to all who posted and a special thanks to the poster with the pics, they were very helpfull.

i wonder why mine actually tightened up when I heated mine? I think the handle bars may be stainless steel. The guy at machine shop thinks he can help me this morning. I was at least glad to see someone else posting about the same problem I had. Mine I didnt think was that bad but I took the engine and tranny out to clean the inside and that when I noticed with all the linkage disassemble the handles were hard to pull still. Glad you had good luck.

The one I worked on needed cut to get the center shaft out. I used a hole saw in the drill press to drill the rest out of the lateral.

Not sure. I spayed mine, heated, sprayed, heated moving litle by little between heatings. Never really got red hot but got it off with some use of a hammer.

$100 mine is fixed. Had to be pressed out and new pin made. Trying to make sure there are no issues when I sell this machine.
