  • "Free" Max II

I got it for nothing, it had been used in oil field work, 1200 hours when the meter was cut.

I drained 2 feet of water, then it needed a battery and 30 feet of chain and a gallon of wd 40. Surprisingly the starter worked and no ether needed.

Got the old Vanguard running. Took it out, broke the last original chain, used the remaining chain from the initial batch to repair in place, headed home, drove it into a steep banked creek to see what happened. Took on water, drove around while sinking, found a beach, drove out, pulled plugs, poisoned environment with rusty wd-40 and mud, finished driving home.

Fun machine for under 200 bucks invested.

Sounds like a good ride. I'd take a free Max any day.

Jerry I believe Joe just got the machine for free and is not offering it up free.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

            Jerry.
Having replaced chains, dealing with rust and jamming wood blocks into striped chain adjusters, free has been costly.

Yet still cheaper than a new one, eh? Enjoy your "new" ride.

It has broken all but one chain now, another today, a 60 drive chain. So much rust. Frame, axles, everything but the sprockets look to be wasted. Oh well. I am going to run it as is and replace what breaks for now. Bearings all likely all shot. When it runs it will do anything. I like the challenge of it, and I have learned that this thing should be driven like a backhoe, slow and easy. Any hard maneuvers lead to broken chains. I suppose if it were all fresh you could beat it like a rental car.

                          Joe,

According to my sources you will probably need to replace the bearings too. That much water in the tub can saturate them. After a long time, rust sets in and the bearings are trashed. If you haven't already done so, grease them as soon as you can. That will force out the rest of the water. It might also help keep the water out when you go swimming.

Good luck with your "free" machine.
