Went to look at a 1996 MAXII. It had been sitting for three years in a garage. It was piled full of lawn chairs, kids toys and dust. One tire a little low but all others holding and look good. Gas was three years old the guy said but thought it would start. Hit the key and there was a click once and a whirr the second time. Thought possibly dead battery or bendix was bad. He pulled it over three times and it fired right up. Not bad for three year old gas. Drove it around a bit but I had never drove anything like this before. seemed to work fairly nice, just a little jerky mostly from my technique I figured. Looks fairly clean and decent shape. looked under front floor and in engine cover and all seemed ok. Tried starting it a couple other times and first pull started right up. Engine oil was a little dark but not bad. So I finally pulled the pin. My first 6X6. The very next morning I took the top off to clean it, change oil and grease it up and check out the starter. This is a 14 HP vanguard. I saw where the starter belonged but just a hole now. followed the wire to under the engine base plate on the left. The starter broke off, fell under the engine, got wrapped up in the left rear chain, broke the chain, munged up the gear a bit and the chain piled up and bent the frame back and broke the welds in the corner of the frame. Then somehow all pieces had moved and piled up in the bottom so they were not touching anything and you could drive it fine and never guess there was anything wrong. Also the brakes were completely removed, all that is left is the disk's. Who knew these things had breaks?
So now the project starts. Does anyone know where there is a good parts list or parts book for this thing? Does anyone know where I can find a complete break assembly for this thing or where I might look. I also will need a chain and possibly a sprocket. Has anyone tried those round roller chain adjusters on Ricks relics site, are they worth the money? mine have big screws jammed in them to hold tension. Any suggestions on who the better companies are to deal with on parts both new and used would be appreciated. Thanks
