  • Engine Swap?

    Hello All,
    New Here,appreciate Any Advice.i Bought A Max 11 Recently,it Has A 14 Hp Vanguard.i Have A Go-devil With A 23hp Vanguard.what Kind Of Modifications Would Be Needed To Replace The 14 With The 23?
I Belive It Has A T20 Skid Steer Trans.can She Handle It Or Will I Strip Sprockets,chains,belt,etc....is It Worth It?the Little 14hp Runs Like A Clock.
I Have Been Wanting An Amphibious Atv For Quite A While.i Already Have The 23 Vanguard,so It Won't Cost Too Much For The Swap-out.
    Any Info Appreciated.

Welcome to the site! The swap will be VERY easy. The 23HP and the 14HP Vanguard both have a 1" shaft, so you can use the same clutch. You would want to swap the govenor spring from your 14HP stock Max II motor to the 23HP as well. Other than that it is a very clean and simple swap. That will be one heck of a machine when you're done!

Jeff,Is it true that the Max 11 with the 14 hp. engine came with hollow axles?Maybe only in certain years. I thought that was true and that maybe RI. have discontinued that model? If so ...Wouldn't be a good candidate for a 23 hp. engine.

As far as breaking belts, sprockets, or chains goes; I would say that your belt would be the weakest of them all. I seroiusely doubt you will do any kind of harm to the sprockets, and if your chains are in good shape, then your belt would take all the questionable extra stress. I'm running a 14hp vanguard in my boss, and (I converted from the sachs) when i was setting it up and testing it, I used the belt as my stress cushion. I started with it a bit loose and beat the crap out of it. When i smelled the rubber from the belt slipping under the stress, I knew that the rest of my drive-train could handle the abuse. I gradually tightened the belt until the abuse didn't cause the stink. At worst, I sacrificed 1 belt for my conversion and tests. When completed, I ran full throttle, up a 45 degree hill for a distance of approx 100 yards, with two 160-180 pound passengers, without a problem. Not tootin my horn, but just trying to give you an idea of what you can expect. The only other thing I can think about is room in your hull. If the 23 hp fits in the body without cutting it up, your set!
It's all just nuts and bolts.

You're correct, the 14 HP Max II did come with hollow axles, but I don't think that they would have a problem holding upto a 23HP Vanguard. I ran some wild 440 two strokes with old stub shaft hollow axle Max II's and they worked just fine.
