  • Another Max IV diesel

So, I've seen a couple V-twin diesels installed, (kinda loud), and one 4 cylinder Kubota, (kinda big), but all with the T-20.
I just started my project. 3 cylinder Kubota D-722 20 HP diesel. No clutches or T-20 will be used. It'll be hydrostatic drive. If that's not enough, I'll be adding a turbo to the Kubota and turning up the fuel. It'll sit below the body and keep the rear seat.
Should be fun. I'll get some pics this weekend.

I've been thinking of doing a hydraulic diesel Max4 for years. The only thing that's stopped me is the size of the hydraulic motors and how they would fit in the body. I sized the Winsun 25hp diesel up along with the motors and I just didn't see that there was enough room without getting into the rear seat area. Many up-motor conversions get into the back seat space and there are several machines out there with a metal deck over where the back seat was, and several folks use that space to carry a cooler and other gear. Those machines look pretty sharp set up like that.

That Kubota is physically larger than the Winsun I sized. Another concern is fluid dynamics and flow rate. I think you would have plenty of power to turn the motors but you do loose a lot of effort in the fluid flow. The power equivalent would probably compare to having a 16hp engine in a conventional Max4. Take that into consideration if you are concerned about speed. You will add a few pounds of weight as well and I don't think the weight would be balanced as well as a stock Max4
even if you lower the engine in the bay.

Those are some of my thoughts and reasons why I haven't done the diesel/hydraulic conversion. I do think you are on to something, but I think using a hi-power gas engine, like a vertical Kawasaki 26hp, is the way to go, and yes, go with the liquid cooled version, for about a $1000 new from MSC Supply.

Well having done a diesel conversion with a Hagen, I can't be happier...it's got all kinds of Oomph for me...but then I'm adding a turbo for chitzngigglze anyway.

Sounds like a great idea and I applaud your out of the box approach.

PICTURES...this thread is absolutely USELESS without pictures....come on now..it's been more n five minutes..get those pics up! LOL

Got some work done this weekend. Test fit of motor. It'll sit about 5" lower than this.
The rad will be mounted horizontal under the cover with an electric fan blowing out.

It's made of 304 stainless. I've since cleaned up the welds smooth.

image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgOk, so after some consideration, and wanting to finish by October, i am installing a T20. Just for now though.
Here are pix of trans mounts, engine mounts and turbo setup.
