  • Max IV Bearings

Just looking for info on a 99 Max IV i just picked up, serial number 15330...bought it for 2500, good shape overall, want to do a resto over time. Havent really looked over it yet, but wanted to replace/adjust the essentials, i know 6x6parts has most of what i will need, i'm just not sure of some basic info. Not sure what size bearings are on it or the type of axel(hollow, solid, splined) or what damage to look for on the sprockets...anyone have .02 they wanna share?....thanks

Simply look at the axles in the machine. That will quickly tell you whether they are splined or not. If they are not, stick your finger in the end of the axle inside the tub and you can tell whether they are solid or hollow. You should at least have solid axles in that new of a machine.

For the bearing part numbers, do a search here in the Max forum. There are several good threads that detail those.

Thanks Mike, I got a good look at machine this weekend, splined axles. Everything else looks good too. I read on here somewhere about using chain lube and not grease, PO put a ton of grease on chains. Should I leave it or clean it and use chain lube? Also, the trans to rear axle chains have probably better than 1in of play, can't imagine chain stretching that much. Can i remove links or just replace them?

If the rear chains are out of adjustment replace them. They are so short that adjustment is critical. On one that age I always check the lower transmission mount bolts. If they get loose the trany can wear down into the frame causing very loose main chains.

snack, i'm pretty sure chain lube is better than grease. i believe grease holds dirt, etc. if you replace or clean the chains, i have found ''dupont chain saver'' to be the best. can get it online. have fun !! john boy va.

I've been using NAPA white lithium grease in a spray can. Works well.
