  • easy shift kit

My husband just installed one of the easy shift kits from Richards Relics in our 1998 MaxlV, but when attempting to shift, it seems like the clutch is only partially disengaging no matter how far back he pulls the steering arms. The easy shift arms dropped right in, with the diamonds straight out from the tranny. Any ideas on what to do? should we pull the engine again, take the floor out, and adjust something else?

    Thanks much!

it might just be that the clutch is hanging up and nothing to do with the shifters. over time belt dust gets into the clutch and it can get sticky and not disengage that final little bit and when that happens the input shaft is still turning and it wont want to shift at all. you may have to dissasemble the clutch and clean it.
they dont call me mad because im angry!!!!! im just a little crazy thats all!!!!

When I first installed my easy shift kit on a Buffalo, the transmission seemed to be partially engaged. In order to get it to shift smoothly and completely I had to adjust the springs on the linkage. For my adjustment I increased the compression on the springs.

I'm sorry to post and disappear, I'm also busy getting ready for an upcoming surgery, my attention got drawn away from this until he just asked me if I had any answers.

To add to what I wrote last week, he says sometimes it shifts smoothly, but MOSTLY it won't go in forward, then not in reverse, then not forward, then goes in reverse, then into forward, then not reverse -- in otherwords it is all over the map, mostly NOT shifting.

Carrant do you mean you increased the compressionon the springs on the easy shift kit? DO you have any idea how many turns, or did you just try one turn at a time?
You must be doing it with a mirror, because my husband has had to take the engine out just to see the linkages from the kit...

        thanks to all in advance!

Well he reported some improvement by tightening the springs on the shift kit, but unfortunately the throttle cable broke while he was still adjusting/testing!
          When it rains it pours.

Anyone have a suggestion for replacing the throttle cable rather than buying the very expensive one from RI??

          thanks!

            Hi:
My first move would be to take the old cable out and see if your local powersports shop has one or can order one to match. My guess is it will be a snowmobile cable, but I could easily be wrong. A good powersports dealer who deals with many types and brands of machines or a powersports repair shop would probably be best. Good luck.

Depending on the ends, and if the casing is ok, try and measure how long the cable is. Then go to a local bycicle shop and see if they have anything. Some shops can make cables on sight. If you can get the cable itself, all you have to do is slide it in the original casing and hook up the ends. I ended up going this route when i repowered my 6-er' and found it to be alot cheaper and easier.
It's all just nuts and bolts.

                bbbuddy,

Yes, I increased the compression on the shift kit.
The kit for the RI Buffalo has two nuts to apply the force of the spring either forward or backwards.

I only had to adjust one of them ( been so long that I don't remember which direction had a problem ).

Adjusting the shift kit linkage is not a problem with the Buffalo. I lift the bed up and the springs are right there on top. I've been meaning to post a picture of the shift kit installed in the Buffalo...

Good luck with the shift kit once your throttle cable issue is resolved.
