  • Suspension seat and t-20 gearing

For anyone considering a suspension seat for there Max IV have posted a link for the seat that I installed in my MaxIV. As you can see the cost is just over $100.00 and they are available from several different suppliers. If you like to high speed trail rides or just going though rough stuff this is the seat for you. When your on tight trails you can fling the max around the corners and the seat supports you giving you a chance to go faster with less effort and more support. I have my seat sitting just above the frame rails so the center of Gravity is better. Since I am able to slide the seat forward and backward you can put your weight where you want it in different traction situations also sliding the seat towards the rear puts your weight more toward the center of the vehicle and therefore gives a better ride. I can now use the left brake easier because it is in a much better position to use. My knees don't touch the dash anymore and I don't have to worry about banging up my knees. The suspension smooths out bumps very well and makes fast or slow riding a lot easier! Overall it is money well spent that will make your 6x6 riding a joy and make your max all around more capable. As you can see from the picture the seat looks as if it belongs in a Max. I can't even begin to tell you how pleased i am with the T-20 gear reduction. The machine climbs better, comes out of mud holes better, doesn't bogg down, accellerates better on the trail, has power available right now for any situation. Reverse works so well it's almost like another machine. Over all I would say the gearing has given my max 40 t0 45% more off road capability and I am extremely pleased! Anyone looking at this modification should consider the 13 tooth gear on the T-20.

    Dan,

Could you snap some pictures of how you mounted the seat to the frame?

The Machine looks great with all the mods

I wonder if I could fit 4 of those in the back? They would be inward facing but may be a better choice than the front facing bench seat we currently have. I would be interested if any argo owners have tried this on their machine?
        Thanks

Hey thats nice. I think I would like to install two in the front and make it where you could remove one and slide it to the center when not loaded with people.

              Pictures of the mouted seat

Okay here are some pictures of my suspension seat mouted. There are as many ways to mount this seat as there are people. I tried mounting the seat high and didn't like it so I choose to take two 1x4 treated deck boards and cut them the lenght of the max so they act like a wood frame brace. Next I took two heavy duty "L" brackets and bent them in a vice and mounted one end to the stock max seat mounting bolts and the other end to a hole I drilled through the deck boards. I used wing nuts to hold everything down because I wanted to be able to gain quick access out on the trail if nessary. Then I mounted the seat to the deck boards, bolted everything down and cut the plastic rear panel to fit around the seat.It was easy, it works and it gives the max frame added support. For those of you who want a prefect job you can cut plywood to shape and cover it with metal diamond tuck or black rubber mats.

Where did you get your t-20 gearing done?

I was having problems with my T-20 And sent it Back to R.I. for warrenty work while it was there I bought the 12 tooth sprockets welded onto the T-20 output shafts and had them installed. The Sprockets and shafts are not cheap, about $375.00 as I recall. They also have a 13 tooth sprockets that reduces the ratio about 19.75%. I recommend the 13 tooth because the 12 tooth will cause some chain problems, where as the 13 tooth will work with the stock chains w/o reducing links. The process is expensive but the lower ratios are much better suited to the harsh terrain I run in. If you need lower gears or just want more pulling power at the low end it is a worth while investment. From my stand point it is a modification that I absolutely love. The Max simply does everything better but does lose some top end. In my case I rarely get a chance to go over 15mph anyway so having a 20 mph top end doesn't brother me.There is talk of whipper making T-20 output shafts that will allow you to change sprockets according to your needs in minutes. This would be the ideal situation.P.M. whipper and ask him about the output shafts.

Here is a post from Route 6x6 , of a man who owns a Max IV ,that also did the suspended seat modification like Dan did .

" This is the single greatest modification I added to my MAX. It greatly added to the comfort during a ride for the driver. The only disadvantage to this modification is it now is essentially a 3 seater. This is offset by the benefit of added legroom in the rear as you can now stretch your legs out on both sides of the seat "

                      Hey Dan
I have thought about getting rid of the Max just because it beats the hell out of me going across fields. That seat is a great idea! Im going to pick up this one up from attwoods today. How long did it take you to install the seat in your Max?

After re-reading Dans posts, I will be going to Lowes to get the deck boards. That will be much easier.
