  • Max IV primary chain play

2001 Max IV primary chains have about 2 inches of play when pushed down on. How much play (if any) should there be?

Primary chains ,transmission to rear axle, are so short they have to be quite tight. I prefer about 1/4" movement mid way. Because that chain is nearly vertical it will ride up on the lower sprocket if very loose.

That primary chain has always been a pain for Max4 machines. I've always said that its a design flaw on an otherwise simple and easy to service machine. If it had an automatic adjuster it would have been better. What worse design than to have to pull the motor and mount to replace the rear chains.

I agree. Replacing the primary chains is rather differcult. A lot of work. But adjusting their tension is easy.
