I usually see the tip of the screw broken off. I groove the axles to accept the snaprings used in later models. If the sprocket is still usable , drill next to the set screw to free it up. I don't groove the axles to factory depth of .034". I only cut to .015 " and find the snaprings stay put fine while not weakening the axle. If the vehicle has 2 seperate rear sprockets and are still usable,I face them together with a spacer and weld together making one unit. Another fix is retain the sprocket with clamping collars. You can put split collars on a loose one if you arnt going to remove it to replace bearings ect.Last edited by msafi65; 12-23-2015, 01:23 AM.

mcmaster carr sells clamping collars. check online and make sure to get the 2 piece camping collar. i have used them to hold sprockets to the axle. just clamp the collar next to the sprocket and then weld just one half of the collar to the sprocket. that way you can still slide the sprocket off the axle if needed later. good luck, j.b.
