  • Let the fun begin....

Picked up my first Max II today. From the serial # looks like a 1978. Body and tub look great. Frame looks good as well as chains. It's got a 340 Yamaha 2 stroke in it that runs pretty well but think I'll go 4 stroke. Starting the tear down to clean and inspect it all.

Well I'm in the process of pulling the engine and t-20. Other than the guy telling me it's a Yamaha 340 snowmobile engine I don't know much more till I get it out. It did also come with a Koehler k440? It has new jugs and Pistons. Guy told me he replaced them all because he was told it needed new rings. Said he never got it running right and put the Yamaha engine in. Said he then found out that the jets in the carb were "drilled" out. I'm going to check out the carb on that and see if I can get it going too.

If it had a Kohler 2 cylinder 2 stroke it was a factory Big Max. The Big Max was the model with the larger JLO, Kohler, or Kawasaki engine. The Kohler engines had chrome plated cylinder walls and if they're worn badly they will need to be re-plated for the compression to be back up to spec.

You've got the right idea putting a 4 stroke in it. Get a V twin Briggs Vanguard off ebay, but make sure it has a 1" output shaft that is keyed. Also, don't ever deal with Route6x6/Richard's Relics for parts or you'll go broke trying to put it back together and become very aggravated with the horrible customer service. Will I be able to use the clutch from one of the 2 strokes? Or are they both going to have taper shaft? I assume if possible I'd have to change the internals because of rpm diff.

You'll have to get a new clutch.

Kinda figured that but was hoping. Thanks for the link!
I'm a while away from that point. Have lots of cleaning/degreasing to do! Figured I'm going to strip it down. Change/inspect all bearings, chains, and sprockets. Paint or POR15 everything then put it all back together. Should be a sweet machine when done.
