What mph is common in a Max II with 16hp engine? 25-30 mph? Trying to figure out the right motor to get in my new project Max. Like to have enough power to climb steep hills and get a little speed. How do the 6x6 with the harbor freight 13 hp do?

Hi Dman
I have a 2000 Max II with a 18 hp Vanguard engine, high rev kit, exhaust restrictor's removed, stock exhaust and re jetting of carb. stock gear ratio's. I can reach 31 mph at 5500 rpm on my GPS, and at 3600-3800 rpm(stock) I get 21 MPH. I installed the red spring in my driven clutch that gives me huge TQ to climb whatever I want. I am amazed at what I can climb. I would not go any smaller than a 18 hp. I hope to do some "real" mods to my engine this spring to bump upto the 25+ hp range. Red clutch spring is a must in my opinion

There are many factors that determine speed. With the MaxII gear ratios being stock, tire size and engine RPM will set your speed on hard pack ground. Add in some rolling resistance and speed will always decrease.
More horsepower does not mean faster...it means it gets you to that speed quicker.

Hi WJSD311
sorry for the delay in response I am in a foreign location with limited internet. I bought mine from the recreative Industry in Buffalo before they were bought out by Mud-Ox. If you go to Mud-Ox web site you should get it from there. I believe I paid about 27 dollars a few years ago.

I also have a 16hp Max. I have recorded 21 mph max speed on gps watch, but have definitely gone faster than that on tarmac down hill (It felt faster anyway). An extra passenger makes more of a difference than I would have thought, but a trailer with 200kgs seemed not to make much difference apart from up hills (and even then was acceptable).
