  • 2006 Max IV Belt Kohler Command23

New to the 6X6 world, I need help with changing the belt. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Pictures would be very helpful. Thanks

I removed all the motor mount bolts, slid motor to middle of stand, then leaned motor back towards clutch side (this brings clutches closer together)...took some effort, but this works.

Yes what snackmaster said. What works good also is to unbolt the clutch and slide the engine towards the middle of the stand allowing the clutch to drop down. Wish there was a better way.
What it lacks in ground clearance it makes up for with traction.

Hmm, seems like a lot of work. I've had my belt on and off a few times without having unbolting or move anything. It is a bit of a strugle, but it takes me no longer than 5 minutes or so each time. I do wedge the secondary open with a short length of wooden dowel between the bottom of the sheaves to give some more room. I start by feeding the belt between the secondary and the tub, I push the belt so it is between the secondary and the T-20. Then put the top over the primary. Now the fun, rolling the belt onto the secondary...I find it easiest to get it started on, then with the Max in gear and a strap holding the laterals forward, I roll the machine down the driveway to roll the belt on the clutch.

This may not be the right way to do it, but it works for me.

Now if the machine was unable to be rolled forward/backwards or be raised off the ground I probably would undue the engine stand mounts.

        YMMV

I do mine like Zuk, except I use a thin rope to pull the belt around the secondary.
I wrap a thin rope around the belt as close to the secondary as possible and pull the rope ùpwards. It will only move the belt an inch or two with each tug. Relocate the rope back down and pull again.
The grooves in the belt keep the rope from slipping. Repeat this process until the belt fits over and into the secondary.
I do remove the four engine mount nuts to allow the engine assembly to tilt a tiny bit as necessary. I don't know if this actually needs to be done but I do it anyway.

On the pre 2010 clutches removal is as such. Roll the belt off the inside of the lower clutch toward the tranny. Pass the belt under the driven and between the tub and mount bolt. I usually have to turn the clutch by hand to get the belt th pass between the clutch and frame. It then comes off the engine clutch. Install in reverse. Hardest part is usually getting belt between tub then the frame. When I have a transmission out I've started turning the top of the frame down about 1/4". It is a big improvement on belt installation.
