  • 98 Max II I'm thinking of buying, wanting some thoughts

Hey all, I'm looking at possibly buying my second Max II, and thought that I'd post up some pics on it and see what you guys think.. It's a 98, as the paperwork shows in the one pic, but its had a really rough last 18 years.. I guess when the guy that has it now got it, someone had swapped in a two stroke, and he put in a single cylinder Kohler, and has a spare Kohler for parts that comes with it.. It needs 3 axles worth of bearings, but if I buy it, I may just go ahead and replace them all.. It's been abused as you'll see in the pics, but with the knowledge I've gained from here, plus what I can still gain from the gurus on here, and the knowledge that I learned rebuilding my first one, I think I might be able to bring it back to life.. The engine that is in it is in bad shape from what he tells me, but if anything, I figure I can put in another one of my Honda v-twins that I have sitting around.. Just thought that I would get a few thoughts from you guys whether I should make an offer on it, or take a pass on it.. He's asking 800 OBO for the 6x6, spare engine, spare transmission(he's been a 6x6 guy for about 10 years I guess) spare set of wheels and tires, and some other stuff..

Again, any opinions on it are appreciated, and I figure if nothing else, this will serve as possibly a good way for me to learn some things on the later machines to look out for, since my current Max II is a 70 model...

Does it come with 6 axles? If the tub is in good shape with no cracks and the T20 doesn't feel like a rock jar then go for it. As long as you don't mind a project that is. You'll have some money invested by the time its done by the looks of it but a ready to ride used machine isn't cheap...

I think it's worth it but I would offer him $600. If both the transmission are T20s in decent shape, you could sell them and make your money back. The downside to the parts that I see is that the sprockets look like they are worn and would need to be replaced. Plan on buying all new sprockets, axles, chain, bearings, etc and make sure that's in your budget. If so, you'll have a great machine at the end of the day that works like new for only a couple thousand dollars.

I definitely am up for a project... I fully restored my first one before I even got to run it, and the love for the 6x6 side of things has stuck. It comes with all 6 axles, and basically everything he's taken off/out of it so far as far as I know.. I'm waiting to find out if it has a few of the smaller things still with it, like the wiring harness, throttle assembly, and all the brake setup... In some pictures the stuff is there, and some it's not.. I just noticed it looking through the pics again.. I'm waiting to find that out before I really commit and make an offer.. And the spare transmission is another T20 with another driven clutch, and it's the d shifter style, not the Popsicle stick like my first machine.. If I do end up with it, expect a full rebuild thread from me(again) and to be some of the first to know that it's mine..

I'd consider it if looking, looks like a newer frame in it with inner bearings.

I thought the 98's had inner bearings in them from the factory? It's solid axles as well...

You're good man, I meant it in more of a questioning way.. Lol I don't know much on the newer machines other than what I happen to remember reading here and there

Well guys, I committed today to buying the 98 for 600... Gonna be picking it up in about 2 weeks... As soon as I get it home and unloaded then I'll take better pics and post them up in a restoration thread.. I think I might pull the Honda out of my first one, and stick it in the 98, and put the 2 stroke back in my 70 like it's supposed to be.. Now that I've worked on a few more two strokes, I don't hate them as much... Won't say that I love them yet, I just don't hate them as much..

The Max2 looks like a good deal for the money. Even if you have to sink some money into it, it looks like a nice builder.
