  • Fastener questions

I'm going to start the reassembly of my Max II this weekend. I intend to replace every single fastener. Have been contemplating stainless after the joy I had disassembly. Thoughts?

Also should I use grade 8 hardware when possible?

Thanks all your advice and past threads have proven invaluable so far

In my opinion grade 5 would be best. Stainless is expensive and can gal up easily. Grade 8 is strong tensile strength but more brittle. Just use antisieze and grade 5 and you'll be just fine.
What it lacks in ground clearance it makes up for with traction.

Thank you I didn't consider the brittle factor. Believe me, after the battles I had with rear axle sprockets, anti seize will be used generously

Sorry but I would use Stainless where ever water and mud would come in contact !
Use a little oil on them when putting it together ! Also Nyloc nuts !
Grade 8 is stronger than 5 but these machines really don't need a lot of them .
If you look up Totally Stainless in PA you can get all you need at a great price !
I deal with them direct here and thy have Great fasteners at a good price !!!
Also Copper antiseize will hold up well under heat and load.

Thank you, I was mainly considering stainless for flange bolts, brake calipers, and pillow blocks. And believe me anti seize will be used liberally

I replaced most of the hardware on my machine with S.S. and S.S. is rated at grade 5. just a thought.
