  • Max IV axles

Has anyone ever made their own or had a fab shop make new axles for their Max? I have 1970s Max IV that currently has the hollow axles that are smooth, I'd like to replace them w/ solid axles but at the $185 price tag per axle I'd prefer to find a cheaper option. They shouldn't be that hard to fab up, basically weld the wheel flanges on some round stock and drill a hole for the sprockets.

I make bolt through axles all the time. For the Max IV I use 4140 steel turned ground and polished. The axle flanges are usually pretty easy to salvage. I add the gussets that were used on 90s axles before the forged hubs of now days. I cut the hubs off in the lathe after removing the studs. Could have a machine shop salvage the hubs and bore to 1.25 to slip on new shafts.

I make all my own axles. I use 1144 stress proof. I buy it in 12' lengths for about $100. You can get 8 axles out of a length. $8 an axle

I've made 1-1/4" bolt-thoughs for the Super Swamp Fox (can't remember the steel) and keyed 1144 axles for the A/Stock Attex and halfway through re-axling (sp?) the 980 Hustler. I've made a couple 1" sets out of 4140 for the Attexes over the years, too. It's a much cheaper option to be able to make them yourself.

Thanks for the input, I'll probably get a set of 5x4.5 flanges and have the local fab shop make me some new solid axles using one of the old hollow axles as a template. Also while I have axles out to change the bearings I'd like to add bearing cages, but I am having a difficult time finding bearing cages for the 62mm bearings. Does anybody know of a place where I can fid them or a spec sheet for them to have a set built from?

Don't hold me to this but I think you could use the bearing cages with the 72 mm bearings as long as the inside diameter is the same which it should be. The cages should match up to the flanges you have. You could also check with max/mud ox parts people to find out for sure. Max6x6.com | Max Atv Parts | Mudd-Ox Atv
