  • Need help... no power to right side of MAX II.

    Just took my Max II out of storage for the first time since last winter. I only use it with tracks for ice fishing and store it for the summer. I was taking it for a gentle ride around my property, in about 10 inches of fluffy snow with a harder one foot base, so no problem there. Not having to run it full throttle to go through nice and easy. All of a sudden I hear a loud clunk from underneath and now I have no power to the right tracks. Left have power, but nothing to the right. I am limited in my experience with repairing these and intend to take it apart tomorrow to give it a look and see if I can do it myself. Can anyone give me some idea or ideas on what it might be? Thank you.

    If you notice a big change in stick movement on the dead side it's probably a broken band in the transmission. If both sticks are even in movement then Idd guess that a chain broke or I've seen the center sprocket on mid axle break loose. Do you have reverse on both sides?

      If you are running pinned axles, it's possible you just broke a bolt. Probably the center axle or the jack shaft one. You could have also snapped a the chain off the jack shaft.

        When ours didn't work on the right side we had a broken band in the trans. I believe if you remove some of the fluid you will see metal. This is not coming from someone who knows as much as the others who replied but I just went threw it so we learned. Good luck

          Great news. Of all the possibilities, it turned out the jack-shaft (?) chain broke and everything else is okay. It is the vertical chain about mid-body. I believe they call it the jackshaft chain. Probably the least expensive and easiest for me to fix myself. Hoping they make them with a master link, so I don't have to disassemble anything to get the new one on.

              That is an easy fix. When you get done the adjustment for those two chains I'd done by moving the jackshaft. The chains that drop straight down should be kept fairly tight so they don't climb onto the lower sprocket. The upper to the transmission needs a 1/4" slack mid way. Any tighter than that it will shift hard. That chain can be purchased at most bearing stores if it's not oring sealed chain. Measure the distance between 2 pins, 3/4" = # 60 roller chain while 5/8" would be #530 oring. Hope this helps
