  • Max II

This is my first post under this site's new 'administration'. After being inactive for a while, its apparent to me after scrolling through a few threads and observing the conversations on them that there is a different 'vibe/feeling' on this site now.

Anways, one of my coworkers is looking to get rid of his Max II. He let me take it home to give it a once-over and see if it's anything I want to purchase. Im 99% sure that I am going to end up purchasing it, but want to check on a few things first. This machine is a lot older than my 1999 Buffalo Truck that I had and am not very familiar with some of its features. It is a 1989 Max II with a Tecumseh engine (I ran the numbers and confirmed the year). If I purchase it, I will be likely the 4th owner of this machine. It is believed to have very low hours. It appears to be in amazing condition for the most part. My only concerns are as follows:

I have never had a machine with a tecumseh engine in it. Judging by the amount of oil in the bottom of the tub, along with a leaking T-20 as well, how reliable were the tecumseh engines?

One of the front chain adjusters is bent. (see pictures). Will this still funciton like it is supposed to or will it need to be repaired?

The middle axle on the left-hand side of the machine 'slides' in and out about 1/2'' or so. It appears on the inside of the axle that it is sliding over another shaft or something? Were these axles hollow? What should be done to remove this slop/sliding from the axle?

Other than that, I am going to start changing fluids and attempt to get it fired and see how well it runs. Any information/tips you folks could give me would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Martin, I like the Tecumseh's though many here don't and the oil looks to be from that repaired breather hose of the gasket under the breather. I'd change the oil and start from there, if it runs good leave it alone, carbs are probably the biggest issue on these and the float may have also stuck filling the crankcase with gas.
The axle slide is probably the outer bearing's collar is either loose or the bearing itself broke where the bearing collar locks.
The adjuster looks as if somehow it is under the frame rail on the bottom and the top could just be bent back in place, just look at how the others are mounted.

        Good luck with it.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.
