  • Starter problem

    1996 Max II w/B&S 14HP Vanguard Twin
Not sure if I should post this here or in the engine forum, but here goes. After being away on vacation for 3 weeks, I went out to take a ride. After 3 tries to start the engine, the starter just spins. I suspect the starter Bendix, but who knows. Is the starter part of the generator? What is the easiest way to work on this? Pull the engine or what? Looks like a tight space to work in unless engine is pulled.

I'd pop the starter off, I believe there are just two bolts holding it in. From there, make sure your flywheel has teeth, and rebuild the starter as necessary

on my 99 max 11 with a 16hp vangard v twin I had to pull the motor one of the bolts was on the bottom side, just tipping the motor made it hard to replace the bottom bolt

It probably is a whole lot easier to say than do. Never had to pull my starter when the motor was in place. Motor is four bolts though, and with them out, you should be able to maneuver it around.
