My best uneducated guess would be the return would go to bottom to keep fumes down. But really have no idea why else they'd do that unless they didn't wanna guess which one to hook up to get fuel. LOL

Would it be as simple as "76" might have a dual carb setup and each have its own fitting and line?

I have a 1996, with only one hose fitting, low off on the passenger side. I have found that when the tank is low, and riding on a sloped hill, there are times the gas does not flow out the line...possibly two fittings on the bottom allowed a tandem gas line to get gas from either side when on a slope?

Mine is a 76 that WAS 2 stroke jlo440, twin cylinder, single carb, but, it also has a home built fuel cell from po, but it is only a single feed no return, yet.
Edit**-from what I can tell it was factory aside from the bunk fuel cell, I'm 4 stroke swapping and also going to most likely get a dune buggy or hot rod aluminum fuel cells to fit in the factory location.

mine is a 77 with two hookups. I use the one on the right looking at the dash. The one on the left actually is sealed shut it appears from the factory. As a side note a previous owner had it hooked to the bottom of the tank with a barbed fitting. Super bad idea. All the trash plugged the fitting and part of the fuel line.
