  • Vanguard carb sticking at full throttle

I was hoping for a little help, I'm not really good with carbs. I have a 1997 Max IV with an 18hp vanguard motor. The motor runs good from idle to full throttle but sticks at full throttle. Once I get to full throttle, the linkage stays there until I manually push the linkage closed. The previous owner adjusted the throttle cable so it only went to 3/4 open, so I think he had the same problem. I've attached a few pictures. Could I be missing a spring? If not, what causes the throttle to come off wide open?

Disconnect the throttle cable to see if that is binding or corroded.

With the throttle cable off (and motor off) it still sticks at wide open.

Is the butterfly binding or the governor linkage?
You may need to disconnect some more of the linkage to find it.
        PB blaster the whole thing.

It's the semi round piece that the throttle cable attaches to, I assume that's the governor linkage. When you move that clockwise to full throttle it gets hung on the metal bracket. I was thinking there was a spring issue, sounds like maybe just lubricate and clean up the metal on both pieces that are catching?

Clean and lube and try it again.

Mine does the same. The governor moves a millimeter or so too far and will stick closed. I just shortened my throttle cable until it was just before getting to that point.

I removed the governor linkage and spring, installed a high rev kit and a tiny tach and no issue's, I dont go over 4600 RPM as I do not have a billet flywheel yet, but the extra RPM/POWER is there when I need it. I can easily hit 5400 RPM.

One might guess the bottom section of the round part on top (where the spring and cable attaches) is slightly bent and comes into contact with the indented part ( largest visible piece with the large rust area on it) of the mounting bracket.
To me it looks like it was bent without the proper tang bender ( like I did to Tommy's this weekend) distorting it.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
                  Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Bingo. That’s exactly what’s up with mine
