  • New (to me) Max IV need help with MODS

I may have the plainest looking Max on this site. Here are a few things that I want to do to it. Anything else that I should do?

    1. Rollbar. Going to have one made.
    2. Winch-already ordered.
    3. I need to find some kind of basket/storage for over the engine
    4. Paint wheels black

The winch and rollbar are really the only other things that I would say were necessary for some serious trail riding just for safety and for the times you get stuck. The rest is up to you and your preferences. I think your Max looks great the way it is. Very clean!

The black wheels would make it look a little newer and the basket would help with storage. I painted my wheels black and I like the outcome. Of course if you get it muddy you won't notice the color If you ride much at night you may want some auxiliary lights too.

You covered most of the popular mods.

Smokin, some guys found a way to put a storage box under the back seat. some shallow to go over the battery and some narrow and deep to go down ahead of the battery. they are handy but best if you change the hinge.

        Smokin,

The funny thing about these machines is they go from vanilla to cool quickly! I see you have the 25" rawhides on your machine my recommendation is to keep them for all around ride-ability.

Here is a picture of my under seat storage. I used a toolbox that fit under the seat. Some guys have made some really nice drop in metal units that they fabbed.

One thing to consider is the Max IV has a pretty high CG due to it's engine location so be cautious of putting a bunch of stuff up high as it may get unstable . Good luck in the buildup and take pics as you go.

is there a special type of paint to use to paint the wheels black? i would think spray paint would come off too easily.

I used a can of Rustoleum and brushed it on after sanding the wheels and spray priming them. I'm sure it's like anything else, the more prep work you put into the paint, the longer it will last.

Instead of putting hinges on my seats I'm going to notch a couple of pieces of angle so that they will hook under the rear seat frame support then I'll screw them to the bottom rear of the seat cushion so that they hook under the rear cross suppose of the seat frame. Then I'll add a piece of angle that runs across the bottom front of the seat cushion that just fits inside of the fount seat frame support.

This way I will be able to quickly remove the seat cushion, and git it out of the way, by lifting up on the front of the seat and sliding it forward. To put the seat cushion back in, I slide the back in place while holding the fount up a little, once the back is hooked under the rear frame support I just push down on the fount of the seat to lock it in place.

If I have problems with the seat bouncing up and out of place I'll devise some type of hold down latch or pin for the front of the seat.

There should have no problem notching the angle with a grinder. I'll post some pictures when its done, I should get to it in a about a month.
