  • Grinding noise in Max IV?

Since it turned colder and snowed my first outting was plowing my driveway. It moves forward and backwards just fine and turns fine but there is always a “grinding type noise”. I can only describe it as it seems the trans isn’t fully engaged but it does it at all speeds and both directions? Almost sounds as if you had the rubber lugs on a snowmobile track rubbing on the tunnel for a better analogy. Maybe it’s just “chatter” I’ve heard about for the T20? It’s only done it since it turned cold. Seemed fine the couple rides I took this summer when I bought it (94 max IV). Any help or input is appreciated as always!

Thought maybe a chain was rubbing the floor pan but that doesn’t seem to be it. Chains and sprockets all look good.

    Thanks,
    Newbie owner

Not sure if this will work, but give it a try......apply more pressure to the laterals as you are driving. The more pressure you apply the tighter the bands grip the drums inside the T20. You could just have some slippage going on and of course, you don't want any slippage because the lining on the bands is only about .040" thick. If you have a metal on metal sound, your bands may need to be relined or replaced. Running the machine with worn out bands can damage the drums.

Thanks, I’ll give it a try next time out. It’s actually in the garage right now to remove the front chains and swap hubs/tires and install the tracks. All the drivetrain looks good and seems tight. Need to find the master links on the chains so I can remove them haha.

Check your front bearings with the chains off, listen for a rumble. Since you described this noise as starting after plow install the weight difference could cause some noise, i assume the plow frame is not hitting.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
        Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

I’ll give all the bearings a check while I’m in there monkeying around.

I’m also going to change the fluids and give the trans/sticks an adjustment. Not sure when that was done last and its got 350hrs on it.

1FD97176-BB3B-4E00-9A0F-09617902A577.jpgFound the culprit I think. Was putting the tracks in and. Prices a slice in the tub..right where the lower clutch bolt is. It had backed out and was bouncing around. Put a whole in the tub and stripped the end threads of the bolt. Now to find a bolt somewhere or maybe I can go to the auto store and match it? Hope the internal threads on the clutch didn’t get stripped 😡.
