  • Need Max 2 windshield dimensions

Since it seems that windshields for the Max 2 are unobtainium I am just going to build one. From the pictures I see it is nothing more than a welded aluminum frame made from what appears to be 1x1 inch aluminum angle with a piece of Lexan glued in. Mounted on a piano hinge. The hardest part appears to be the support arms. But if anyone can give me the outer dimensions of their windshield I would be grateful. Pics would be great.

42 views and nobody can tell me the size of their windshield? Can anyone tell me if it is the same as a Max 4?

hey rick ...i thought you would get those right away so i passed your post a few days ago. here are the dimensions off my max 2 factory shield. bottom length at hinge is 40''. from bottom length to top of shield is 20 1/4 '' . where the curves start at the top is 37 '' across . after the curves at the top corners the straight length is 26 '' . if you need a template to get it exact i will trace it and mail it to you . just post your address . good luck , johnboy va.

Johnboy, that would be great, I will PM my address to you. You say it is curved at the top? That sounds different from what I have seen on the net in the videos I have watched. Maybe they were homemade also? Is the frame made of angle aluminum or square tube? I am assuming it is aluminum. If you could get a picture that would help. You can e-mail it to rickf1985@comcast.net. I am noticing there are a lot of members from Virginia, I do get down there once a year over labor day to Syria for a Military vehicle trail ride. I am planning to bring my MAX down if I can make it fit in the trailer with the jeep.

rick..mine is curved at the top corners and i think it's because it's designed that way so the top and side curtains all fit water tight . it's all from the factory. you can buy clear polycarbonate sheets from mcmaster carr co. if you go with 3/16'' thick to 1/4'' you won't need a frame. the frame is really only for installing the snap hardware if you have a top. they also sell piano hinges . also, any co. that makes boat canopy 's has the tubing and fittings that work for holding up and folding down the windshield . you can find those online . i think a 2' x 4' 1/4'' of clear poly from mcmaster carr co. is around $ 50.00. j.b.

I want to go with a frame for a couple reasons. One is that I want to put a top on it somehow. They are as rare as the windshields. It has the snaps all around the body for the top. The second is that I need a frame for support from the tree branches and like that I am going through on my property. With no support the plastic, or the hinge, would break right off. I need the frame to attach side supports to.
As far as the top I have a couple sets of supports for bikini tops for my boats, I actually have the tops too but they are pretty rough. I figure I can modify the supports and them make a top to fit.

I have been looking for tracks but I only see two makers and the Adair tracks cost more than I paid for the machine!!! That ain't happening.

And McMaster-Carr is my goto place for anything fastener or hardware.

The II and IV windshields are different, the IV is closer to a third gen Argo windshield.

I think with the info I get from John I should be able to put together a decent windshield. Then I have to figure out a top. I can build anything out of metal but fabric and vinyl are a whole different story!

i agree that a frame is a good idea since you will be making a top later and for support as you mentioned . i guess you could find a piece of aluminum extrusion for the frame online . for the top i think you could bend a back piece of round aluminum tube the same contour as the windshield frame , use the boat top type ends to fasten it to the body, then run 2 side tubes up to the windshield frame and use the same type ends on the frame. after that a boat guy or even auto upholstery guy could sew up a top unless you tackle that yourself. anyway i think you have a fun project going . i'll send the tracing in the next day or two. j.b.

Thanks John, I buy all my metal from a local (well, semi local) wholesaler. I get pretty good prices and if I need bends like that windshield top they can do it for a fair charge if I am also buying metal. I need to put in an order anyway since I have a M37 military truck I am restoring and I need at least one 4x8 sheet of 18 gauge steel. I also need to get some square tubing just to have on hand since I am always building something. Actually I am in the process of turning an old Coleman pop up camper into a tow behind utility trailer for the MAX.I am cutting it down in length and width and narrowing the axle. The bolt pattern for the wheels is the same as a lot of mowers I believe and I can use pretty big 12 inch tires on it. The projects never end and I am not physically able to do a lot of them but I just keep trying. Much to the chagrin of the doctors!

You probably have what you need already but my ocd won’t let me not answer since I said I would.

The windshield is flat, with a trapezoid shape.
The hinge length is 40 inches long.
The windshield is 41.5 inches along the bottom to the points of the frame.
The top two corners are rounded with a 4 to 6 inch radius (couldn’t measure it well)
The measurement along the top is 36 inches (ignoring the radii corners) to where the top line would meet the side tapers
The height is 20 inches over the frame exterior

I have some pictures that I will send to your email address

Russell, Got the pics, thank you very much. I am surprised to see a safety glass symbol on the glass. I always assumed the glass was actually Lexan. From your pics it appears that the frame is two pieces of aluminum angle, one bent for the top section and on straight across the bottom and screwed to the upper part. The glass appears to be glued in. Is this correct? If so it should not be very hard to duplicate, I can get my metal supplier to do the bend for me. I would probably weld it instead of screw it though just to make it that much more ridged.
