  • Engine too tall?

Hi ya'll! I have a mid-80s max ii, with an 11hp briggs engine. The machine came w a spare16hp v-twin cub cadet engine which i believe is a vanguard. It appears as though it will be too tall to fit under the top shell/cover, by approx 2". I see that many folks have the vanguard engine, some considerably larger hp than the 16. Any tips or tricks? Is it necessary to modify the shell for clearance? Any info appreciated. Machine is a "basket case" of sorts, littered with tie wire and duct tape. I have yet to operate or ride it, but both the 11hp and the 16hp run. Needs rear chains, two chain tensioners, tires, proper hardware all around. Trying to nail down the engine clearance issue before getting much further into the repairs

Personally, before I decided to do the engine change I would fix what I see and test drive it. That is unless you wish to do what many of us do and completely rebuild it with all new chains, bearings, flanges, chain wear pads, painting frame etc... . However unless you plan to get into the trans at rebuild time, you may have to take the trans out after all that work because it has a problem.

As far as the engine, if you have the first gen upper with the say 6"x9" hole then yes you need to modify the upper engine access hole.

Search the Max forum as there are many swap threads on there with plenty of guidance.
    Good luck.

    Joe Camel never does that.
