  • What kind of engine do I need for Northway Explorer?

Finished rebuilding a Northway Explorer. Recreative Industries said in all their parts books its a "285". Got all the parts I needed from them except engine. Book shows JLO. Not sure of size/hp/cc. Question is, what does anyone recommend for the "best" engine for this type of 6x6? Not looking for the biggest/baddest, but a good running engine for a weekend machine with the kids in the field. Find JLO, 12 hp duropower, 16hp B&S, or ? Would appreciate any assistance and/or ideas.

I would run at least a 16hp motor and probably try to find an 18hp if you could.

For the trails: a four-stroke of at least 18hp, for an adrenaline rush and just plain great fun: a two-stroke twin.
Stuck in the seventies- not in the swamp.

        (6) Attex, a Hustler, a Super Swamp Fox, (2) Tricarts, (3) Tri-sports, a Sno-co trike, 3 Dunecycles, and a Starcraft! ...so far

Thanks to all. I'm talking to Richard to see what I can get. I do have the old green top - in very good shape - might be willing to trade?

Call Recreatives, they make Max ATV's (which are the same exact thing as the Northway Explorer). Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511 They are really helpful people and they'll be able to get you all the parts you would need.

I second that. If you're talking parts you can get them cheaper direct from the manufacturer instead of buying from a third party who also has to buy from the manufacturer. As for the engines, I would also look somewhere else for those. There are much cheaper engines all over the place. Save some cash for something else
