My regulator/rectifier went bad, and allowed the battery to then fry the charge coil. I haven't fixed it yet, just unhooked the Bad Reg. and charge the battery occasionally. If you charge up your battery, you should get lots of starts out of it. Have you tried pulling it with the pull-start? If it stalls and wont crank but pull start will turn over, your batteries going dead, check the regulator/rectifier. Sorry if these are more silly questions, but: Do you let it warm up several minutes before riding? --Air cooled engine has no thermostat, and takes longer to get some heat in it than say, a car. IF you take off right away you can get a "Four Corner Seize" As the piston expands more rapidly and sticks in the sleeve, but I think this is pretty unlikely in a JLO unless it was rebuilt with a Weiseco piston, (High Quality but notorious for this) or rebuilt with a piston just slightly too large. (Cheap piston not quite within spec, wrong piston, etc...)
Also, what Carb do you have? Mikuni or Tillotson? First photo below is a Mikuni, cable goes in center top. Second is Tilly, throttle cable attaches externally, this is an underside view, but you'll see the layers of gasket/metal on the bottom.
