  • Max 6x6 briggs and stratton 18hp questions

Hi I just recently purchased a max 6x6, kid I bought it from owned it one day, said he was driving it and motor seemed like it ran out of gas. I noticed ithat had no compression so I pulled valve covers all 4 rockers seem to be moving as they should, so then pulled the plugs, pistons look intact turned motor over by hand and the pistons arnt moving. How likely is it that both connecting rods would brake at the same time or even crank would brake?

Is thier anyone close to northwestern Pennsylvania that might have a extra vtwin motor laying around they would sell, otherwise might pull the one in it and just take to our local small engine shop.

I did find a Briggs 16hp locale, was wondering would the starter and header fit from the 18hp to the 16hp? Thanks alot guys.

Did you check the oil level? Also no compression could be the rings.

Here are some thoughts.... If you were able to spin the engine and see that the rocker arms were all moving properly, then the flywheel key is not your problem. By removing the spark plugs, how did you see enough of the piston to know that it was intact? It doesn't make sense that neither piston is moving while rotating the engine. With the plugs out, use the starter to turn the engine over for a few seconds. The motion of the pistons will force air in and out of the spark plug holes and you will here the air "woosh" in and out. Make sure there's no dirt or debris that will get sucked into the cylinder during this process. If you hear the "wooshing", then you have to look further for the cause of "no compression".

First, if your valves are adjustable, make sure they are adjusted correctly. If that's not the problem, then you have a burnt or warped valve, bad rings, or other physical damage (cracked piston or block). If it were mine and the valve adjustment didn't fix it, I would pull the heads.

Of course, if you want to check for a broken crankshaft (which would keep the pistons from moving) just turn the motor over and observe both the flywheel side and clutch side. If the crank is broken one side will not turn while the other will.

Does it keep running once started or it only runs on ether?

Did you take the top off the carburetor? Most of the time, they are full of junk and need cleaned. If the bowl is dry, you may need a fuel pump, but step 1 is pulling the top off.
