  • Loud clunk from left front wheel / axle area.

Developed a loud clunking sound in the left front wheel / axle area. I'm handy at a lot of things, but wheel bearings and such are not one of my strong suits. Anyway, I'm guessing that is what it is. Running tracks on a 1999 6-wheel, front chains removed as required. Any suggestions before I start to tear it apart. The clunking was intermittent and now constant and my machine pulls slightly to the that side.

Pick it up and pull that track. Check the play up and down in that bearing. I’m guessing it will be very loose. If you have a splined axle vehicle that year will have setscrews holding the brake and sprocket. I usually need an acetylene torch to heat the hubs and remove the setscrews. If it is a bolt through axle they aren’t as hard to remove. Lots of good advice on this site for bearing replacement. Check it out and get back on with the diagnosis.

      Is the parking brake on?

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
      Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Mine did the same during turns no tracks. Yup the bearings were junk inner and outer due to never correcting the out bearing. Only difficult part is as stated getting it apart and if the front then the working space sucks. Might also be excessive wear on the axle as a result.

          Thanks for the info.

I just found a video by someone from 6x6 World that shows every step of the way on how to change the bearing. Yes, I thought it was the parking brake at first, because it has stuck in the past, but it is not the problem this time.
