I have a older max ii with the non inner bearings. The axle just slides into a rod. My question is when installing the axle should I put the chain on and move the axle in and out until the chain runs parallel with the frame then lock the axle down? Or do I just push the axle all the way in and lock it down? Thanks

Max ii axle installation

Hi Ben,
Slide the axle in or out so that the chain is parallel to the frame and then lock down the axle with the bearing.
This era Max II uses a bolt through the sprocket and axle, so this is the only way to align the sprockets.
The following applies to Max ratcheting style chain adjusters and assumes that this is a front axle:
If the chain is not aligned correctly it can pull the chain adjuster pad toward the center of the vehicle, disengaging the teeth and causing the adjuster to slip and release tension.
This will happen when the top of the chain is tight, during hard braking or while backing up under a load. To check for this before it happens, first align the chain with the frame, then try to rotate the front axle forward while holding the center axle so it can't turn to make the top of the chain tight. If the chain is pulling the adjuster pad so the teeth are coming apart, you can loosen up the 4 bolts holding the adjuster to the frame and slide it to adjust. I like to set them up so the chain is pushing the teeth together slightly.
