  • Early Max axle identification help

Hey, I'm trying to identify what axle setup i have on an early max (possibly 1978) serial 5559.
It's got a 3 bolt inner hub, but looks like a 5 bolt adaptor, with some sort of drum welded also.

    Thanks,
    Jonathan

Not sure if this helps but there was an axle change Ser. #5521 to #6220 used on the 295 and four cycle. It uses the same front and center axle as the Big Max does till # 6219. Not sure which Max with what motor you have so hard to look up. I have original part numbers. Rear axles are also different. See if someone with your model and serial # close to yours may have same setup. I think this is right. It looks like they only made a thousand of this type. I didn't look at the picture. I have no diagram on that one. Steve

If you don't mind me asking, where did you find diagrams, original serial numbers and how many were made? Thanks Cup

Your max was built in 1979. Sounds like you have the early 3 bolt axles with factory adapters. The three bolt tires went away in the early 70s I believe. Standard five bolt wheels were the replacement with the adapters. Those axles were used for several years until just 5 bolt ones replaced them. They are hollow with front and center being the same. Rear probably has bolt hole in different location. The rear sprockets were changed about this time making all 6 axles the same.

3 bolt rear axles have different bolt spacing than front and center as the sprocket tubes were very short. The chain adjusters were changed to the click type in 76 or 77.

My Max II was purchased out of state and shipped to Michigan. A parts list and early Max II diagram were provided as there were no local dealers for parts at the time. The drawing I have has the early three bolt hubs, but only reading thru the part list shows there were later modifications to the parts and assembly over a range of models and serial numbers. There is a price list corresponding to the part numbers for all. I do not know how many were made per year. I forgot I even had these as it has ran pretty well and only decided to work on it as I have the time right now. I decided to replace chains, sprockets, jackshafts, and a lot of other little things you discover.
I have recently purchased many parts and the current prices compared to the old price list have not risen an unreasonable amount since 1995 in my opinion. I make my own chains, axles, and shafts that I am able to, but I have been satisfied with everything I have purchased as to price and quality otherwise. Steve
