  • I'm back with a max and a half or so

Hi all. I'm back with a max iv project, whatever are some must do mods while assembling? For now I'm going to be running a super tight budget 18 HP vanguard with 23hp cam. It will probably be a smoker as it had water in the cylinders at some point from the looks of the cylinders , but the rest looks pretty decent except the combustion area in the heads is also equally rusty. But aside from the engine. What are the absolute must do mods for a long lasting max iv? I'm planning body band and something to brace the "fenders" with the seat frame. Aside from that I'm not real sure the best mods. I'm just glad to back and to be in a max iv.

I was hoping we'd see a couple guys en route since we were in NC and back to pa but we didn't pass anyone at least not anyone hauling on an open trailer lol.

I can't get over how big a max iv is. Quite a bit of difference from a ii, more than I thought there would be anyhow. It looks like I should be able to get in and out easy after I modify the seat position. The sides being nice and wide open i shouldn't have too many issues getting in or out.

Well my wife decided I should just buy a 20hp vanguard that's kind of local, since it's already running rather than rebuild the 18 horse that might or might not be a smoker, I haven't tried to hone it out to see how deep it might be pitted. Either way I'm calling it a win, I just don't know if I can resist letting it alone until the rest of the machine is together. I have the 23hp cam still waiting on a budget engine. I'm hoping I don't need to swap cranks the picture online looked like the 20 has the stubby crankshaft snout. From what I gather the only difference is the carburetors from 18 to 20hp. Does anyone know if the combustion chambers are different from 18 to 20hp? I read that the valves were all the same size from 14 to 23hp just different combustion chambers and 21 to 23 having the different intake and exhaust. If anyone can verify that would be awesome. It would be real nice if my wife liked me enough to trade her 23 horse for the 20 we're going to pick up, but I won't hold my breath

Thank you johnboy how is the track testing and development coming, I always enjoy reading your findings. Are you still running the highboy? I might take the extra frame I have and try to find a transmission and build an open machine with no body. If we ever get another real winter I might give a **** at tracks, I like the design of the channel tracks and my welder friend gives me a good price. I guess I should just finish one thing at a time instead of trying to juggle all of my projects lol

Pulled the older of the two max ivs out to start figuring out what else I will need. I may be on the prowl for a parts machine if any are around. My wife decided she wants whichever I don't build for myself.

sounds awesome ...at busco last time i tried a test with just the center tires driving my half tracks ( removed the rear chains ) it worked great at home .. more power and turned easier . but the mud at busco was real sloppy and the center tires just spun in the tracks . so both rear wheels driving is better . highboy still works great ..the design has been proven to work well . may get adair to make me a set of half tracks though . homebuilts have taken a beating !! keep at your projects and have fun . jboy

Well guys Im still kicking. It's been a rough run, but I'm still around. 2024 was a real rough year for me, kept feeling sick in and out of the hospital, almost died twice, but I'm all healed up now after they got me figured out and fixed up. I tried logging on several times but I guess the site was being updated or something. Anyhow I'm still around here in south central Pennsylvania.

Have had some big changes in plans since I was last able to log on. I bought a ridiculous engine for my max iv. I'm not even building a racer. But I picked up an arctic cat 580efi engine. Way more than I need. But I've been known to go a little over board from time to time.

I'm curious what other guys have done to get their t20 to live in high power or high stress applications or is it just a matter of not giving it all the beans? I'm planning splined axles and sprockets upgrade, beef up the transmission and engine mount. I'd like to move the engine ahead of the transmission and down low as I can. I'm also moving the front seat back a few inches. It only really needs to be a 1 seater anyway. I will need to source a yellow spring at least, unless anyone has a recommendation for a different secondary setup. I'm looking for any tips and advice I can get for clutching and how to make this t20 live.

Does anyone have a source for 9 inch wheels? All I can find are argo, they seem a bit excessive on price but I guess you gotta pay to play. But I'd like to use the rawhides I have, unless someone near carlisle pa wants to trade for other 25 or 26 inch tires with 8,or 10 inch wheels. I want a little sidewall for extra cushion.

I'm curious if anyone else has a max iv in the 30-35mph range. What is your tire size and is that on stock sprockets or custom? Any help greatly appreciated.

I know my engine choice isn't ideal, but it's how it's going down, should be in the 90-100hp range after a freshen up. I've also figured out these 580s are terrible for fuel consumption, I figured out about 8-9mpg for a sled. Which I don't have my max for economy I have it for fun and getting out places I couldn't otherwise. Too much power is just about enough, and I've never heard anyone say man i wish I had a little less power to get up that hill, through that mud hole, etc.

Thank you guys, that's all I have for now. I'm glad I'm back. I hope to get out to Ashtabula one of these get togethers, I got a couple buddies I'd like to catch up with. Going through some bug changes in life after being down so long. I'm glad I didn't give up, these 6x6s give me something to look forward too.
