  • Max IV Liquid cooled engines???

    Hi! Max IV-950T/1050T???

Hi! I am interested in a Max IV model with the liquid cooled engine and tracks option. I live in Eagle River, Alaska and hope to purchase my first 6x6 in the spring. Has anyone had any experiences with the liquid cooled engines for the Max and would like to know the pros and cons of having the liquid cooled option. I play and work outside alot in the summer and winter.
    Sincerely,
    Roy

P.S. I really like the web site...........

    Roy,

You cant go wrong with the Max IV with the larger liquid cooled engine. However if hunting and hauling is what you are looking for I'd look at the 8 x 8 especially the Mudd Ox. (Warning Opinion coming!) the Recreatives tracks are just that for recreation. you have to step down to a 21 inch tire and lose ground clearance. The Argos and the Mudd OX keep the standard tire and they are designed as more commercial / outfitter grade. Just my 2 cents

        Robbie,

I went to the max web page and it looks like they have indeed upgraded their tracks. I'm curious though, none of the pictures showed axle bearing extensions and the brace bar that used to run between the axles. Does anyone know if they did away with those or are the photos just examples of how the tracks look? My prior post was based on the fact he was in Alaska I was thinking that if he where going to be hunting / hauling that he could probably get a loaded Mudd Ox for the cost of a Loaded Max IV I could be wrong though.

Don't go by retail prices on the Maxes. I just bought a new Max II from MidWest ATV at a fraction of retail. I got a quote for an equivalent Argo from Bost (I see he's a great guy), and they were $6,000 more.

Buddy Moore, at MidWest, is selling the Max IV 1050T for $11,480 (Midwest ATV Product Listing - Max IV 1050T), and he discounts all accessories you order through him just as much. The vehicle you buy is built for you at the factory and shipped directly. It's the same price for shipping as RI charges the dealers, so it pays to shop dealers for the best price. You can even find your own transport company to pick up the vehicle in Buffalo, which is what I did because I didn't have access to a forklift or loading dock.

I don't doubt the MuddOx is worth every penny- it really looks like it is, but comparing retail prices is not comparing real world prices. You need to get quotes for both and see what premium you are actually paying for the MuddOx before making your decision. You might still think the MuddOx is worth it, but people shouldn't assume that MuddOxes actually cost the same as everybody else when it comes time to write the check.

P.S. I think this industry is full of really, really great people who believe in the products they sell. This goes for Ox, Bost, and Moore as well. Talk to them all to get their takes on your decision.

I know Bud and his sons, rode with them, good people. What do you consider an equivalent argo to a II? Ride them both around for a day and ask your aching back if they're equivalent. I have a friend whose going from a frontier to a II however, because he thinks the II is more fun. He seems to trade vehicles every couple of years anyway.

I guess I should've use the phrase "comparably equipped." I realize that the Argo has several plusses over a Max, comfort being one of them. I also like the idea of replaceable skid plates, which is not offered on the Max II.

That said, the Max also offers some things the Argo does not, and the premium for an Argo Frontier was just too much. Here is the breakdown of what I was quoted from Bost for an Argo Frontier versus what I was quoted from Midwest ATV for a Max II.

                    From Bost ATV:
                    2008 Argo Frontier 6x6 650 $14,695
                    Winch $1,279
                    Rear Receiver $227.65
                    Dealer Prep $425
                    Total $16,626.65
                    Less Discount Offered (-$500) $16,126.65
No roll bar or belts available. Standard tires are acceptable. 2009s not being delivered, but price increase expected.

                    From Midwest ATV:
                    2009 Max II 850T $8,860.00
                    Winch $464.00
Roll Bar / Seat Belts $257.00
                    22" Rawhide III tires $130.00
                    Package A $169.00
                    Shipping To NC $625.00
                    Total $10,505.00
I used another transport company and saved $100, plus you need to take out the cost of the roll bar to really compare total prices.

It would have been a tough choice if they came out within $1000 of each other, but this was a no-brainer for me. Now that I've been using my Max II, I can't think of what I would pay $6000 for in an Argo that I don't have now in my Max.

Keep in mind that I think that they are all great machines. However, very few of us will just pay anything asked to get the "best" machine. Each of us needs to do the research on capabilities AND price, compare that to what we intend to use the vehicle for, and make the decision with accurate information.

Glad you are enjoying your II. The list pricing on new stuff is too much for me. When I heard my friend was trading for a II, I was happy 'cause maybe I'll get to drive it. I also like to see Recreatives make $.

                        Max IV tracks

                        Robbie,
You are correct on the frame/track rails. The Max track packages for the Max II and IV still use the axle supports/bearing cages and the track rails. When the photographer took the pictures for the website, we were out of vehicles with the cages on them. We put the tracks on a Max without them so just to show what the tracks look like on the Max.
