  • Now that it is in pieces what else do I check?

Ok so two weeks ago I got a 1990's MAXII with a bad JLO 440 engine. I have gotten a used 18hp Vanguard locally and a 4 stroke C-Clutch & drive belt from Richard. I've serviced the engine and I'm going to bench run it today. This engine was off of a water pump and I'm not sure about the governor settings.
Because I'm new to AATV(s) I wanted to run a few ideas by you guys. Something AATV related may jump out at you that the inexperienced repairman would overlook. Here is my list of stuff to do. Would you add anything?

    A) weld up my motor mounts.
    B) change T-20 oil before engine install (Dexrol III)
    C) grease everything (I don't really know how to check bearings unless they are falling apart)( it rolls)
    D) adjust chains? (I don't know how to adjust chains but it should be obvious shouldn't it?)
    E) re-work the upper body to allow the taller 18hp engine
    F) Choke cable.
    G) Throttle Cable. (the throttle linkage is crap)
    I) rewire starter + switch
    J) re-route exhaust (right now the engine has an muffler on it I would like to route the exhaust first though the engine muffler and then though the muffler in the wheel well to make it quieter. Will this cause to much back pressure?) I know this will cost me some power but I like quiet engines.
    K) Install bilge pump + switch
    L) install drain plugs
    M) new 1/4" fuel line + fuel filter (clean gas tank)

I plan at this point is to run the MAX slow on blocks with the wheels off of the ground and see if anything is obviously wrong and go back though A-J as necessary.

IDEAS? Though I don't mind tinkering I don't want to miss anything and need to tear our the engine to get to an widget that needs a tightening.

    Regards, John

Looks good Super hero. Re: t20, holds a quart. Use 28 oz. tranny juice Ford type F and 4 oz. of GM limited slip diff. additive. Happy riding Ps. top plug has a vent in it. bottom does not. If you mix "em up it"ll leak.

Looks good to me. You mentioned checking the bearings and what you should look for. If you have any play in the axles, that is, if you can move the axles up/down or in/out, then you have a worn bearing. Also, if you spin the axles and hear a "lump" in the spinning bearing like there is a worn place, then you probably need to go ahead and replace it.

As for the chain adjusting, the front and rear chains are just adjusted by either pulling the adjusters up or pushing them down. The two jackshafts are a little more involved. For that, look in our how-to section here on the site. There is an article about removing and reinstalling a T20 transmission in a Max II and the last page of that article shows you how to adjust the jackshafts. Here's that link: http://www.6x6world.com/forums/aatv-...tallation.html

You seem to have a good plan, now get to work!
