  • MaxIV HELP!

Pulled the max out of the garage today, and noticed that it was kind of hard to shift from forward to reverse. Ran it about 8-10 miles down the river and road and it stopped going forward or reverse. It just stopped on the trail. It seemed to make a clattering sound and the clutch moves in and out.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Does it move any way at all? If not then it's probably not in the T20. If it's the transmission then it usually goes one side (band) at a time.

Start by checking if the clutch is still attached to the shaft properly, the linkage for the trans is connected properly, all chains are on, etc.

The clutch is all over the place. It slides in and out by hand. I need to check the trans linkage tomorrow when its light. Its really wierd it just all of a sudden happened.

Is the bolt still holding the clutch on? Maybe you sheared the key?

Which clutch is sliding the drive on the engine or the driven on the T-20? I sheared the bolt on the driven clutch on the T-20 once. I noticed it as the machine lost power. The clutch had slid off the shaft far enough to start to slip.

If it's the clutch on the t -20 shaft and only the clutch is moving and not the shaft .then it must the bolt.Which could allow the key to be thrown or the key to barely engage:thus the clattering niose.

Its the clutch on the T20 shaft. But why would that keep it from shifting in and out of gear? How do I fix the clutch?

Because it's not turning the T20. To test that, try putting the T20 in gear while you are pushing the 6x6. It should go in gear then.

As for the clutch, as everyone has said, check to see if the bolt on the end of the shaft is still there and tight. If not, tighten it or replace it if it's gone. If it is there and it's tight, check to see if the clutch spins on the shaft without turning the T20. If it does then you will have to remove the clutch and install a new key because your key is sheared.

It appears the the shaft turns with the clutch. I did this turning it by hand not with the engine running. The clutch will slide all the way over and hit the body of the max easily when I pull on it. The bolt on the end of the shaft is tight. Is there anything inside of the t20 that could have let go? Maybe when the engine is turning the clutch the higher rpms makes it slip?

I have seen this before. The shaft has broken inside the T-20. I have been told it is an easy fix, though the T-20 needs to be puled out.

Got the engine pulled out and the shaft pulls out far enough to hit the body of the max. I spoke to Brandon at Your Nationwide Max ATV Dealer - New and Used Max and Argo Amphibious 6x6 ATVs - Sales, Service, Parts and will be sending it to them for a rebuild. This really sucks. This machine has very little use and I dont know what would cause this.

Got the t20 pulled out and the shaft fell out. It sheared right at the splines.

Yep, there's a picture of that on Richard's Relics. There are different T-20 Versions, you would have the newer style, which has an unsupported shaft. I don't know what stress it takes to break it, or if it's prone to do so only if you also get a weaker shaft, but if you feel the need, Richard's does sell a kit to "Update" to the older supported shaft style, which is supposed to do away with this problem. However, My Wild Wolf has an unsupported newer style tranny, and I have not been gentle, with no problems thus far.(Knocking on wood till knuckles are swollen) I do think this is rare. Anyway, I'd recomend rebuilding the tranny yourself if you have any mechanical know-how. It's very simple, read the how too, and it's easier than the artilce makes it look, IMHO. Shipping that back and forth alone will be quite a bit of $$$

I thought about doing it myself but dont want to spend the time ordering parts, shafts, and everything else. Shipping was $39 to him and he charges $125 labor and has all of the parts in stock. Its worth the extra money to me to have someone that does them all the time do it.
