  • Any preventive maintenance that I should do?

I have the engine and t20 out of my MaxIV. Is there anything that I should do now that the guts are out?

Well, now's the time to inspect the inside of the tub. Make sure you don't have any missing or damaged pop-rivets (That hold the front and rear skids in place). Mogman found about 3 or 4 missing and a dozen more that the center had rusted out and allowed them to loosen up. You can get closed end aluminum rivets and little rubber washers at a well stocked hardware store, but since you already have an order from RI, you can get them from them as well. (Oh, and save yourself the hassle if you do install any. GET A PNEUMATIC Rivet Gun. The manual Snap-On that Jimmy had did the job only with 2 foot pipes on the handles, how we didn't break it I will never know)I would check the frame for any damaged welds or pitting, check sprockets for pointy teeth (if you didn't do them already) I would look over everything in the rear of the Max, and why not pull the seats too since your down for a week or so anywhay?

Where are the axle seals? Are they internal or on the outside? I have 2 chains that appear to be at the end of the tensioner. Can I have a link removed? The chains at one time were rusted and I believe that is when they stretched. The sprockets look great.

Since the bearings don,t require axle seals there aren,t any. NO! you cannot remove a link! That may make a worn out chain the corregt length overall but the chain will still be the wrong distance pin to pin and a worn out sprocket will follow very quickly. If the sprockets are already sharp pointed replace them with a new chain. Happy riding
