      Winch mount

I just posted a picture of the winch mount I made recently in the picture gallery. It might give you some ideas. I used stainless steel (overkill) so I didn't have to paint it.

Thanks for the compliment Mike and the link. First time out with it yesterday and had to use it. Egoperf and I were testing our luck on some thin pond ice when he broke through

A winch is well worth the effort and expence when the situation arises.

So do you think bolting the upper + Lower tub

            Super photos thank you,
I see from your photo that the bumper bolts the upper and lower tub together. Is this something that you just did or is it common practice?

The upper and lower tubs are bolted together from the factory, albeit with wing nuts. It's not like you will remove them for normal maintenance anyway. When you install a winch you gain some strength with backing plates that interconnect the upper and lower tub.

Hey Mark, is your lower mount (Bumper plate) seperate from the Winch Plate on the top, or is it one piece? Either way, its VERY nicely fabbed!

MaximusII. It is one piece. The winch plate and angle (bumper) are stitch welded on the back side so you don't see the weld. The link arm that connects the top of the winch plate to the top of the winch itself takes most of the pulling load. This way I didn't have to weld in large gussets from the plate to the angle.
                  Thanks for the compliment....Mark

Eric, I had the same thoughts when I was considering my design options. I didn't weigh it but I did try to keep the materials at a minimum.

One would think that the weight wouldn't be that much of an issue because it sits on the top of the front rib. The only thing that crosses my mind with the weight issue is the "swim factor". I have noticed that weight distribution is crutial when letting your MaxII swim. I nearly sank my MaxII while duck hunting the other day because the left side sank down more than the right. I had to shift my body weight to the right to keep her up!

I think the reason that happened was because of tire pressures not matching.

I have a MaxII friend, who considers weight the enemy of a II. He has a cheesy little winch, and tow hook up front with minimal and adequate reinforcement. He mentioned smoke coming out of the winch, on one escapade, and I'm thinkin' "gee you can afford a real winch" (bigger/heavier). Why not bolt on some real equipment up there? Because keeping it light, also a 1/2 tank of gas, makes the difference sometimes in whether it climbs out of a messy hole.

You should fab up some for sale! I bet a lot of people would buy them.
