  • My DIY Inexpensive Plow

    Hi All,

One of the reasons I bought my MAX was for some light snow plowing (the end of the driveway, power meter, oil fill, etc...), but the factory plow was a bit pricey ($1000+ w/o the winch). I looked around, but found no third party plows for it, so I decided to make my own. It appears that Moose Plows makes the blade for RC and RC makes the frame for it, so I bought a 60" Moose Plow ($190) and a generic ATV frame (aka Push Tube $179). I then cut the push tubes off, widened the frame 30" ($32 in steel) and voila - a MAX blade for $400.

    New Push Tube, unmodified:

Cut the tubes off, weld on 3" C-Channel:

    Add some braces:

    Done:

I have the track kit on my machine, so the mounting tabs were already there.

It works very well. It, of course, uses the winch to raise and lower the blade. Two notes: I switched the legs from left/right so that the tube was on the outside - that allows them to clear the body of the MAX. Also note that the distance between the mounting tabs is 30 inches.

    Hope that helps someone.

Thats great I like it,Would like to build one for mine also.Would love to have the tracks too,but well you know, like the plow kinda pricey. How well do those tracks work? do you run it in deep snow, and do they work ok on just plain old grass and dirt?Really nice job on the plow.

Great job on the plow. It looks good. A plow is a future project for me too. I got two ATV/tractor plows sitting in the weeds behind my house.

These are the factory RC tracks and are the old "smooth" design (the new design is more like a snowmobile - quite aggressive). I have used them in mud, sand, dirt, water, rocks and snow and they have been fantastic. They tear up the ground far less than tires do, and give the machine a smoother ride. Downsides: they are heavy (something like 100 LBs each), they do not swim well at all, and they slow the machine down, top speed being 15MPH with them on. it is also important to keep the tires at the correct inflation or the wheels will spin in the tracks (I have a front tire that leaks). Also, I do not have the front drive chains on (front wheels are not driven, they are acting as idlers). My machine was this way when I got it and since I do not take the tracks off (yet - I have a set of 26" wheels I'll try in spring) I have left them off. Deepest snow I have been through is 18" of powder - it was no sweat, but the machine did plow up quite a bow wake. Firmer snow it rides right over sinking in about 2 inches.

The factory rubber track kit is expensive, but it includes the tracks, six bearing extensions (each axle now has three support bearings) and some frame reinforcement (each bearing extension is connect to the others on that side with a steel C-Channel). Very strong setup. The third party plastic tracks need extensions as well, but do not have the bearing cages, they just bolt onto the lug bolts. This may put a lot of stress on the outside bearings if you are not careful.

            Hope that helps.

I like the less tear on ground part,My 22"tires tear the grass and everything else up real quick, looks like its been plowed.I don't usually run that fast anyway so 15mph is ok,Would love to have em for snow though, and well just cuz!! Thanks for the feedback, one step closer to justification for them.Again great job on the plow ,might use same setup for mine, simplest design i,ve seen so far.

                Hey SiliconTi,
                Great write-up!
It's been 4 years now since you installed the plow, how is it holding up?
                What would you change?
                What did you change?
The trouble with retirement is.... I never get a day off !!!!
