Some members here have experimented with welding the bodies with good results. Do a search for plastic welding. 6x6 world member ygmir had good luck on his Hustler. I believe he said coffee can lids were a good source of donor HDPE.
As far as painting the HDPE, conventional wisdom is that it flakes off. If you are set on changing color, the camo clad kits might be a good alternative.Hammers should have warning labels.

Welding the body is easier than it sounds
I to am new to this, and was a little more than skeptical about welding the tub using a soldering iron. But Damn it was easy.
The MAX II plastic melts with very little smoke and is sticky and gooey once heated. The melted tub doesn't stick to the soldering iron but easily sticks to itself. I used a piece of the top tub that I had cut away so I can't help with other plastics. I think a typical 3" round hole could be patched in half an hour. Try working on some of the scraps on the tub to get a feel for the process.1970's Max II
