  • Max reusable drain plug

I became frustrated with the disposable drain plugs (read: ran out and couldn't get them locally) for my Max II so I created this modified boat plug to use in their place. It is based on a $3.99 boat plug from Walmart that I chucked up in the lathe and tapered it down with a rasp until it fit in the Max II drain holes. However, the T-handle sticking out bothered me so I removed it and replaced it with a T-nut (I think that is what they are called) and phillips head machine screw. It was a very simple plug to make and I don't think it will snag and pull out. An added benifit is that once you loosen the screw it easily pulls out to drain the hull.

You could also use a drill to spin the boat plug down to the correct size or find a rubber stopper the right size to start with. Stainless hardware would be a good idea to but I just made it out of stuff I already had.

Almost as good as my pack horses but a lot easier to feed and catch.

I made what looks to be identical for my Max II.I had a machinist turn brass for a bolt for a 3/8" nut where you have a philips screw and rivet the end so it can't be backed out too far.Lots of use and has never snagged.

Thanks for the tip! I remembered seeing a similar plug before but I couldn't remember where. I should have known that to because my folks have had two old snapper T-bar lawn mowers. I was thinking it was a red plug I had seen before though, but probably not. One thing is for sure though, hydraulic caps just wont work, I have quite a selection and being cheap I tried them all .

The folks on this forum area a great resource for alternative parts. I wonder if anyone has ever though of using a site like google documents to make a spreadsheet to list parts with alternatives. Google documents would be great because anyone on the forum could add to the sheet.

The original plugs are a 3/4" "Caplug" brand..they are used by several companies.A smaller version by the same people are used by the auto rust proof people.

              Found plugs at Ace Hardware

The plugs are auto trim plugs and I found them at Ace for maybe $.50 each. They were in the assorted nuts and fittings bin area.
