anyone know what year recreative went to splined axles for the max II? i'm looking at a few machines early next week. one is a 70's machine, one is supposed to be an 87, and the other in the 90's. any tips anyone can give me for quickly identifying the vintage of the machine would be appreciated.

Splined axles weren't introduced until maybe 2000? Mine's a '97 model and it doesn't have them. Hey_Dan or jpswift1 would be able to answer more accurately but the ones you mentioned won't have them.
Really it's not too big of a deal though. I would be more worried about getting inner bearings and solid axles. The later year model you can get the better.

thanks mike. the 87 has a new 18hp briggs in it. the 70's machine is all rebuilt and in very nice shape. your right though, inner bearings and solid axles are the way to go.A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
