  • Super Quiet Muffler Kit - Max II ??

    Has anybody installed this? I am curious how much quieter it is. I'm trying to be respectful of my neighbors. I have a 14hp Vanguard B&S.

    Anyone aware of a video with audio on the web?

    Muffler?

    I respect what you are doing but I doubt that your max is any louder than a lawn mower. People will find a reason to be displeased with you if you are doing anything they don't approve of or is out of what they consider the norm. Think about it before you make a purchase.

      super quiet muffler

      Hi guys, That kit only makes it quieter inside the max. It exhausts out the back instead of on the side. Your neighbors will still here you, just when your heading away from them. My 2 cents. Later Mike D

        My Max II 850T is extremely quiet and does have the "quiet" option,but an argo dealer of all people told me that the largest reason for it being so quiet is that it has a Kohler engine which is quieter than the Briggs.

          A newer style "internal exhaust" Max II with a Briggs is even quieter than a Max II with the Kohler (also an internal or inside the body, exhaust). I have the Kohler and my buddy has an 18 briggs. You can actually talk at a normal level while riding in the vehicle together...either one, but the Briggs is quieter. I would try to upgrade to a vehicle with this type exhaust before adding on anything.

            Ive had both an 18 briggs and a 25 kohler in my max2 the 18 had the external exhaust and the kohler has the internal exhaust. the briggs is quieter no matter what exhaust you use (Ive heard them both internal and external) there is advantages and disadvantages to both. internal muffler setup puts the exhaust exit higher (less water gets in) than the side exit (much closer to the water line and prone to leaks at the gasket) the disadvantage of the internal muffler is all the added heat inside the body!!!!!!! from the factory there is a lot of added ducting and heat shielding to keep it cool!!! when converting side exit to rear exit you also need to plug the hole! one other advantage of the rear exit exaust is that you can run bigger tires. with the side exit exhaust you cant run anything much bigger than 22" tires with the rear exit 24" and some 25" will fit (with some heating and molding of the lower body) anyway just some stuff to think abought when choosing an exaust!!!!

              Has anybody though about using a Benz silencer or a Kolpin silent exhaust. (the ones they advertise for ATV's). They look simple to install and I've heard they work good on atv's ...just wondering if they could be used on a Max?? Thanks in advance.

                I installed the internal muffler on my Max 2 several years ago. Its much quieter than the side mounted system as the muffler body is longer and more muffled. Yes it does generate more internal heat, and here in Texas heat is something we have nine months out of the year, in fact yesterday it hit 85 degrees and set a new record. I modified the engine cover on my machine and put expanded metal over the cover after cutting the cover down. I've run the machine in 100+ temp days with 80% humidity and had no problems. I did the exhaust conversion more to fit the 25" tires than anything else, but must admit the exhaust conversion really had ended up being one of my favorite changes made. The side mounted system always put exhaust fumes near the driver, with the exhaust in the rear I seldom detect the emissions. As mentioned earlier, the rear system exits higher and very seldom does water get in at all.

                  That seems an odd judgement.. I'd say it's all about exhaust systems. Engine design can affect sound, esp exhaust port design, but basically it's just releasing a controlled explosion's sound and gas pressure wave.

                  If you didn't care about esthetics, you could strap a small oval compact car muffler on the back of the maxII, connected with a flex pipe to the external muffler, to make a hunting stealthy rig..

                  Internal mufflers could use header wrap, or a tailor made insulated blanket, like the Mudd Ox uses, to keep the heat in the pipe.

                      I'm ready for one, havn't figured out how to have a good header, muffler, and internal tailpipe all in one that doesn't affect power. I'll admit It hasn't been on my short list of things to do.

                        Roger, Roger, Roger, unless you want to sneak up on things now, why would you change the music of that bad, bad Argo? Then you'd have to put music in your videos, because there would be nothing to hear. I'd put it on the LONG list of things to do...at the bottom. A hole in a muffler is an annoying sound. Your noise ain't that.
