  • Driving technique T20 MaxII

    Today was my 2nd outing (in my yard) on my 99 Max II. Although I'm getting better I still have trouble turning without digging up the yard. Does anyone know of a good post in the archives that might help?

    Observations:
    If i'm reveing too slow and I gently pull back on a stick to turn the t20 grinds. T or F

    If I move at a higher speed it seems to turn smoother. T or F

    It drives or seems to handle better in reverse. T or F

    How can I turn at slower speeds without locking one side or grinding the t20?

    If I keep one stick in the middle (neither front or back) will that side free spin?

    It doesn't grind, that's band chatter. It's normal and doesn't hurt anything.

    True, faster speeds will allow the tires to slide easier

    False, It should be the same forward or reverse

    How can I turn at slower speeds without locking one side or grinding the t20? Instead of pulling all the way back on the stick, pull it slightly until it is in a neutral position. Or you can pull back for a second, let go, pull back, let go. Basically making several small skids instead of one long one.

        Mike hit the nail right on the head. I just wanted to add, if you want to stop the band chatter just add about 4 oz of limited slip differential additive.

        Then you can, as Amphiman said, go tear up your neighbor's yard.

          Thankk you, with that knowledge my 3rd outing will be my best. Neighbors may think differently!

              i would be fine if all i had to worry about was tearing up my lawn, mine always trys to stall if i dont turn it just right

                I've been teaching my daughters to drive my Max IV. My suggestion to them and everyone is to turn by pressure. Once you feel the machine starting to turn, control the rate of turn by pressure on the stick.

                Don't pull real hard on the stick to lock the wheels, you just want to make that side drag depending on how sharp you want to turn. Don't let up on the throttle when turning and don't turn from a dead stop.

                Also when driving, try to keep one stick all the way forward all the time. You may be switching back and forth between sticks, but having one stick forward gives you engine braking and enhances your control of the machine.
                You will have to pull back both sticks going down steep hills and stopping, but for normal driving, avoid using neutral or braking with both sticks. Don't start down a hill faster than you want to go down the hill. Maintaining speed down hill is much easier than trying to slow down going down hill. Remember pressure on the sticks.

                  I wouldn't change a thing about what everyone has said, but would just add that there's no substitute for experience. Take all of the above advice into consideration, and go tackle lots of different terrain that you feel safe on. The first time (second? third?) behind the sticks may seem a bit strange, but it becomes so intuitive so quickly that you'll gain lots of different techniques.

                  Get behind the sticks of a 45-50mph race machine sometime, and you begin to learn VERY quickly.
