  • reverse problem in t20

This is my first 6x6,I don't know how to tell what year model it is,but it looks like a 1994 model. It is a max ll with a 14hp briggs and straton, one problem is when you put it in reverse you can turn the tires and it feels locked in gear but when you give it gas it will not move.I hope i got a good deal on it,I gave 800 for 2 max ll,one runs good and looks good and has almost new rawhide lll tires, needs front and rear chains are a little stretched, the other one a techusa motor, dont know what size, good project.Hope this is not a transmisson problem, any suggestions would be appreciated:

er you have tried driving it huh?? Have you tried starting it up while in the seat, then put it in reverse and then pull back on the sticks. It should move then.

Like brushcutter mentioned, that's most likely that's your problem. When you do pull back on the sticks give it some gas and you should start moving.

The T-20 is one of the best transmissions ever built for AATVs. You can still get parts since they're still made today for the Max. I've had a lot of 6 wheelers over the years and the most durable trustworthy transmission is the T-20. They are practically unchanged since they were built in 1969. I've seen 4 cylinder car engines behind them, and high horsepower, high reving 2 stroke engines behind them and they held up without any issues at all.

Anyways, what I would do in your situation is open up the transmission, and get a visual inspection of all of the components. This way you can replace anything that might be worn so you don't have to worry about it in the future when you're out on the trail. You can get parts through Recreatives. Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511 Also, with the help of this how-to article you can rebuild it without too much trouble. Good luck with it.

I don't really understand what's been validated as a reoccuring (sic) problem with the T-20, but I've noticed that since we do 95% of our driving in forward, the adjustment on the plungers for reverse can sometimes get out of adjustment and we just don't take notice. Coosa, there are a few articles here on the Site that'll help you adjust the bands just right, and you'll be over that awkward feeling in no time. There are very few problems that the T-20 suffers from, the most prominent being neglect and/or abuse through the blind misunderstanding of the operator. They even stand up to that well....

Don't feel bad dude, the engine in my first max had set for a while as the rest of the build was completed. When it came time for the first test run the throttle was stuck open (unbeknownst to me) a fact which soon after start-up revealed itself. And as all properly adjusted Max's should when in forward and throttled up the thing left... without its driver... that would be me.

So ALWAYS POINT YOUR MAX IN A SAFE DIRECTION WHEN STARTING
