  • Where's the brakes?

    Hi,
I just purchased a used Max IV (I think it's 70's vintage). I noticed there is no brake pedal or parking brake handle. How do you apply the brakes when driving? How do keep it from rolling to its death if you park in on a hill?

P.S. I haven't gotten it working yet, but I wanted to sort this out before I found out the hard way

You pull back on the sticks to brake. That's also how you turn. The transmission is basically two separate halves. You brake the left side to turn left, brake the right side to turn right, and brake both to stop.

As long as you still have the springs on the sticks so that they return to a forward position on their own, when you want to park it just put the transmission in reverse and it will act as a parking brake because it is essentially braking both sides of the transmission with the sticks forward in reverse.

Finally, there is usually a foot operated emergency brake with either drum or disc brakes on newer Max IVs depending upon the year to supplement the other braking however I don't know what year the emergency brake was added.

The early Max IV also had a pair of disk brakes actuated by a lever to the right of the laterals. The brakes were driven by chains from the middle axle. There should be an extra set of sprockets on the center axles to drive the disks. Yes shifting from f to r without a parking brake can be exciting if you are not positioned properly on a hill.
