If you call Recreatives with the serial number they will tell you the year the machine is. Amphibious Six-Wheel Drive All-Terrain Vehicles: MaxATVs - Call 1-800-255-2511

Based on the pictures with the 1 piece rims, the Tecumseh exhaust system and air filter assembly on the seat, and the drum emergency brakes up front, this Max IV is an early to mid 1980's model. If it was under water, open up the T-20 transmission and make sure the drums inside aren't all rusted. If you can get this machine very cheap, pick it up.

That sounds good. Will the tires hold air? Does it roll? I'd grab it for sure if that's the case. This certainly has the potential to be a great machine.

If the T-20 was underwater it might be shot because the one plug is vented and water could have found its way in. Depending on how bad the axles are, you might have to cut them all out too and replace the sprockets too if they're rusted. You might be starting with a rolling chassis, but if you have a bunch of parts laying around for it, that might not be too bad though. I guess this one could go either way. See how much you could get it for and go from there.

I called Recreatives about 6 months ago , and Dan told me that I could buy a new Max IV upper and lower tub, skid plate, all the axles, and sprockets for about $2,875 plus shipping. You can easily make the seat frames ,seat cushions, roll bar ,buy new 50 series chain ,and engine stand. If you decide to go that route , I have some 12 inch , non bead lock rims , and some Good year Terra tires I can sell you at a good price. It might take some time , but you can probably find a good used T-20 and motor to put inside the new Max IV tub. I would go this route if it were me.

                      max 4 relic

I'd have to agree with Roger although the plastics worth more than that. You can pick up a running machine for $1000-$1500. The frame could be junk to. Offer him $100 to take it off his hands. At least he won't have to take it to a scrap yard. Good Luck Mike

When looking at a machine to buy my rule is : if I can't crank it AND drive it then the ABSOLUTE top price I will pay is $400, and that would be with decent rust free running gear and tires. I only paid $150 for my Hustler 950 and it at least had a motor in it. I now have somewhere around $4500 to $5000 in it. I would have to go with Roger on this one guys-it's junk-$75 tops. Just imagine all the "fun" he would have trying to pull the axles on this pile. And if he's really really really lucky he wouldn't have to buy a NEW transmission. Lets see new motor:at least $1000, rebuilt tranny fromRC $1295+shipping that's $2350 or so, Now new chain, sprockets, bearings, tires maybe - we ought to be getting close to $3100 by now... My advice: take $3000 and buy something that you can ride, if you're thinking resale you'll loose your ass on this one pal.

If it was mine I would plug the holes fill it up with water ad soda wash I think 1 table spoon per gallon hook the negative from a battery charger to the rusted metal, put a rod in the water not touching the rusted metal hooked to the positive. Turn the battry charger to 2 AMPs turn it on. Be careful turn it on in a couple of days all the rust should be gone. It will be pitted but you might be able to get it a part and reuse some parts. It does work. Look for instructions on TRUCKTV. Don't smoke by it it produces hydrogen gas. I know a guy who did a 250 gal rusted gas tank and it worked great he did use a little higher voltage. Good luck. I would take out the trans, and motor first. Is it for sale?

I'll third this, unless you can look inside the tranny. If it's got ATF in it and it's not milky or stinks like old gear oil, the tranny is worth something, still maybe a buck or two at MOST, as you're also hauling away the scrap for him too. A good T-20 can fetch 500-600 dollars with good drums and good bands, so don't count it out if you can look at the tranny.

                              I've done this too

Picked up a running/driving max II for $150.00, gas tank had rust in it,
If you do it it is 1 tablespoon of baking soda per gallon of water NO MORE.
                              It really works!
