  • I have QUESTION

I have a Big Max II 2 stroke soon to be a 4 stroker. going down hill can you feather the throtle enough to keep the clutch engaged to use the motor for a brake.like you can on a gas golf cart ? I have not had a whole lot of ride time sense i bought it just a couple minutes when i bought it and about 2minutes here when i unloaded it. I am changing the motor because the 2 stroke is a pain to get started and so noise you couldn't sneek up on a corps.

hi marshell most prople use the foot break going down hills and the laterals to steer some times i use the engin to compression break as you talked about . on small hills . when you pull back on the sticks to break you can then use the compression breaking relese the sticks jest enought to give controll robbie

Indeed you can keep the drive train engaged going downhill by holding just above an idle on the throttle until the clutch engages. If you don't you have to pull back on the sticks to brake the drivetrain. The foot brake is mainly a park brake or can be used at really low speeds only and preferably on the level.I can't imagine using a 2 stroke as a 4 stroke is so quiet and reliable and has more low end torque.But....a 2 stroke is certainly a higher speed performance engine.

Put at least an 18hp in it and you will be very satisfied. The vangaurds are quiet and sound great.

The T-20 is the best AATV transmission out there and with some more time behind the sticks you'll figure out what driving methods work best for you. I can assure you, that you need not worry about the T-20 at all.......it is a great piece of equipment that was originally built and engineered by Borg-Warner. I had a couple of times where I was on some trail rides up in the mountains of Humphrey, NY and there were some long steep hills which we descended. What I would do is approach the hill slowly, feather the throttle as I began to go down the hill and then I slowed down with the foot brake and pulled back on the sticks gradually on and off to slow the machine down until I reached the bottom of he hill.

I have a Max IV. Going down some real steep hills around here I just pull the sticks all the way back and let off a little at a time, sometimes alternating between left and right until I arrive at the bottom of the hill.

Just do'nt run out of gas or have the engine choke out on you while down-hilling!
I ride a brown '96 Max 4 (skid plate, roll cage, 26" Rawhides, 20hp, custom winch and tow plates) with a 2K front winch and a 4K come-along for back up. I pack 20'tow-strap, 2 chains and 2 hooks,a jeep jack, and a big block of PT wood. Also an axe and chainsaw. And mechanic tools. I have a tote with a tarp and bungees. Spare parts. Two rifles. Hey, arent I supposed to be able to have three passengers?

                    Great Question, Marshall.

For those of us that have not driven our projects yet, this is good information.

In my case, I want an electric ATV. An electric motor won't provide any compression for braking.

I SAW AN ELECTRIC 6X6 POST SOMEPLACE EITHER HERE OR ROUTE 6X6. YOU COULD USE AN ELECTRIC GOLF CART FOR A PARTS DONNER,BUT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE BATTERY WEIGHT.

JRP3 has an electric 6x6 on this forum. Good luck with your project.

With an electric motor you don't need "compression braking". You can just reverse the motor(s) for braking.
